“Don't stare. Rude.”

There were times when she regretted listening to her father. But it was all she had ever known. Being praised, respected, liked. None of that ever mattered if her father didn’t think well of her. Her every step was dictated by him, her every whim his. With her father as a Lightning Lord, it was impossible to disobey. And there were so many times when she’d thrown away something she’d truly been interested in, simply because she knew her father wouldn’t approve. And so, when he sent her off to train as a warrior, she never once uttered a complaint.

A warrior.

It wasn’t something she would’ve ever dreamed of being. She had more of an interest in alchemy and magic… but it was what her father wanted. And she never wanted to disappointment him.

… Yet, she always seemed to in the end.

But those first few days in her new clan were rough. Homesickness gnawed on her like a parasite, and she wanted nothing more than to go home and be with her loving family. And with training so difficult… it was hard for her to find the motivation to continue when her heart wasn’t really into it. There were times when she returned to her room, battered and bruised, exhausted and just sick of everything. She had been so tempted to give up. But through it all, at the back of her mind, she could hear her father’s words, see the disappointment in his face, and she’d push herself harder.

She’d be the absolute best.

And she’d make him proud.

The other dragons always watched her warily whenever she passed, unnerved by her aloofness and the electricity ever crackling at her heels with every step. It made them uncomfortable, the static charge accompanying her wherever she went. Their looks didn’t bother her, though. There was only one person’s opinion she truly cared about.

As months passed, and letters travelled back and forth between her old and new clan, Camilia began to flourish. She tackled everything with a single-minded determination that was as worrying as it was inspiring, and throwing herself wholeheartedly into her studies, aiming to always better herself.

But there were some taken aback by her vigorous determination, and after witnessing her intense training regime, a few approached her, eyes wary, voice low. “Are you sure you shouldn’t… slow down a bit?”

The resulting fallout was legendary.

She turned on them with a viciousness they didn’t know she possessed, lightning crackling around her in a terrifying display of power and anger and righteousness.

… No one approached her again after that.

They kept their distance from her. Even as she began to be known as an efficient duelist — skilled in every weapon she touched, and able to cut down anyone in the ring — they were wary of her, too awed and unnerved by her ability. She was terrifying and magnificent all at the same time. And with each letter from home bearing her father’s proud words, Camilia’s confidence grew by leaps and bounds.

Her walk a confident swagger, a superior glint in her eyes… her arrogance goaded others as much as her powers alarmed them. There were some who called her cold, others who said her arrogance was unfounded, and even more so who pitied her friendless life.

But she wasn’t lonely.

That’s what she told herself when the others shunned her, when they refused to go near her out of spite or fear or whatever else it was. She had her father’s approval, his acceptance, his pride. And that was all she’d ever need in life.

She wasn’t lonely.

And yet, against her better judgement, Camilia found herself spending more and more time around Isabella, a kindly, older dragon who reminded her so much of her own grandmother. She began visiting the old dragon whenever she could, stopping in between training exercises and excursions, sitting down beside her and listening to her wondrous tales. And sometimes, during the long evenings, the Lightning Lord’s daughter would help Isabella knit, smiling and laughing in a display the others had never witnessed in her before. It was during those few precious moments, when she wasn’t focused so wholly on fulfilling her father’s wishes, that Camilia was the most open.

Her true personality began to shine through after that. She was quicker to smile and laugh and joke, slower to take offense and become defensive. And though she still held a shred of arrogance, though there were still others who deemed her unapproachable, Camilia made wonderful friends within her new clan.

Home didn’t cross her mind as often as it used to, and gradually the term began to take on a new meaning.

Yet, even as Camilia cracked open a scroll from her father — filled with considerable amounts of approval and pride — she couldn’t help but smile, her mind far away.

It was true there were times when she regretted listening to her father.

But this wasn’t one of them.

“You ever miss them?”

Camilia paused in her training exercise, glancing over her shoulder at the onlookers, a sword held loosely in her hand. Whenever she trained, an audience always seemed to follow her. She wasn’t sure if it was because of who she was, who her father was, or if she was just that impressive. Either way, it was flattering.

… She wished they’d stop staring at her.

“What?”

The dragon who had spoken was small and unassuming, her eyes bright in undisguised curiosity. She was young and didn’t look like a warrior, maybe a scholar or a merchant that hung around the clan. “You’ve been here for a month now. You ever miss them?”

Her answer was immediate.

“No.”

The dragon looked surprised at that. “Really? No family? Friends?”

Camilia’s mind flashed to her mother’s sweet voice, her grandmother’s soothing tones, her brother’s boisterous tenor. The sounds of laughter and cheer. Of safety and comfort. But Camilia didn’t let any of her thoughts show.

“No,” she repeated, and she turned back to her training exercise, the conversation over.

But from behind her, barely audible, she heard the dragon murmur, “That’s… so sad.”

Camilia gritted her teeth, attacking the training dummy with renewed vigor. She could feel the weight of her audience’s eyes on her, judging her.

Let them talk, she thought scathingly. It was all they were good at anyways. Spreading endless rumors and outlandish gossip.

And besides, what did it matter where she came from? She was here now, and that was all that mattered.
