“Fairy tales are more than true.”
There was no doubt in anyone’s mind that Isabella was the oldest dragon in the clan. Her joints creaked whenever she moved, her skin was covered in wrinkles. And if that wasn’t evidence enough, Isabella took on the mantle of grandmother with pride. She spent her days playing with hatchlings, regaling them with long tales on the clan’s history, all while knitting away in her little corner of the main living hall. She was wise and respected, and even the clan leader deferred to her words. Her knowledge always came in handy during conferences, and there were few dragons who knew more about history than she. But there were times when she rambled on for a bit too long, or her stories turned dull and monotonous. But she never seemed to notice her audience’s waning attention. And when she suddenly came to, to find herself surrounded by snoring dragons, or half the room had vacated, she shrugged it off. They must’ve pushed themselves too hard and simply collapsed from exhaustion. It wasn’t like her story telling was that boring. As it was, Isabella spent much of her time strolling through gardens and enjoying the fresh air, nagging every dragon she came across on everything from their looks to their health. And if a dragon made the mistake of dismissing her concerns, they were in for a serious tongue lashing. She was surprisingly active for her old age, and she said it was to help her keep up with the hatchlings she was forever doting on. But there were always some that claimed that her robustness was a remnant from her younger life. From when she was a leader of her own clan, well-respected and well loved, battling in many great wars and fighting valiantly and fearlessly alongside her warriors. They swore she continued to keep in shape as remembrance or tribute to her lost clan, a clan that had been destroyed by a rival clan. Or an emperor. Or maybe the Shade. It was hard to tell, for the story seemed to change with each retelling. But there were only ever a few who actually believed those stories, and Isabella always laughed it off whenever someone brought it up. And if sometimes her eyes became hollow and haunted, her gaze far away, no one thought anything of it. It was natural for a dragon so old to have seen her fair share of death, and Isabella was too normal to have been anything truly spectacular. ---- “Are you telling them another story?” Isabella looked up from the book in her lap, her eyes narrowing. The hatchlings crowding around her turned to stare at the Ridgeback with undisguised curiosity, whispering to each other and pointing at him. “Yes. I am,” Isabella said promptly. “Is there a problem?” The Ridgeback took one look at her expression before he quailed. “No,” he said quickly. “’Course not.” Isabella stared at him, her lips pursed, and the hatchlings snickered to each other, shooting him sly looks. “Well?” The Ridgeback blinked. “Well what?” “Don’t you have someplace to be? Training? It’s all you warriors can think about.” She rolled her eyes. “I keep telling you to loosen up, but do you listen to me? No. I’m just an old hag. What could I know? It’s not like I’ve gone through it all myself. Why, I remember when I was your age—” “Okay, thanks! Bye!” And before she could even finish her sentence, the Ridgeback was gone. There was a beat of silence, then her lips quirked in a smirk. “Works every time.” She turned back to the hatchlings who were laughing quietly. “Now… where was I?” The hatchlings clamored for her attention. “Ooh! Oh! You were gonna tell us about Cymeri!” “Oh. Yes.” Isabella leaned forward, her voice dropping to a low murmur. “Our leader was just a young dragon when he came across a curious artifact . . .” And her voice droned on, a soothing backdrop in the main living hall.
