The clan that had hired them paid them barely a tenth of the promised reward, saying they had to mine the gold ore and gems out of the mines first before the clan would pay the Blacksand Sellswords the rest. Naturally the mercenaries got mad at being cheated out of their pay - their employers hadn't told them about any payment plans. Still tired and bloody from the last battle, the Blacksand Sellswords' leader drew his sword and slashed the clan leader's throat. All hell broke loose. The clan attacked the Blacksand Sellswords for the loss of their leader, and the Blacksand Sellswords attacked right back. Battlecries and screams of pain filled the air as dragons lashed out with blade, claw, and fang. Normally the Blacksand Sellswords would have defeated them soundly, but they were still tired from their last battle and the clan had strong weapons and armor they had forged themselves. Coastal was caught up in the fighting, swinging his blacksmith's hammer wildly in an effort to defend himself. He had never been in a battle before, despite his mercenary background, and so this was the first time experiencing the bloody chaos the Blacksand Sellswords regularly engaged in. The crazed look in dragons' eyes, the stench of blood, the screams of the dead and dying... It was too much for poor Coastal. He fled the area, running at fast as his legs would take him. No one chased him, too caught up in their own battles to notice him fleeing. Coastal was one of only a few survivors, and even then he did not escape without scars - both physical and emotional. While his thick Snapper hide protected him from most attacks, a Ridgeback scratched his left leg deep enough to leave scars, and a kick from a Wildclaw took out his eye before he bashed her head out with his hammer. The memory of that battle also traumatized him so deeply that he couldn't see blood or hear battlecries without having painful flashbacks. The good thing about being a Snapper is that Snappers never sleep, so he never had nightmares. The bad thing about being a Snapper is that Snappers always remember, so he could never forget what happened that day. In an effort to distance himself from his past, he moved to a different flight. The Clan of Roaring Waters had put out an ad for a blacksmith after their previous one was exalted to the Tidelord, and Coastal believed that the violent life couldn't find him at the bottom of the Sea. He has been there ever since. |

Coastal is the gruff, reclusive sort. He walks with a limp due to his damaged left leg, and takes painkiller potions from Satsuma to dull the ache from his scars. Nonetheless a lifetime of blacksmithing has made him incredibly strong and very muscular. While fighting in the Coliseum and training exalts for Dominance makes up a large part of the clan's livelihoods, Coastal knows that the Clan of Roaring Waters is not the war-mongering sort, and takes comfort in that fact. As long as he isn't called on to fight another bloody war, he is content where he is. Sometimes when he gets flashbacks to that fateful day, or the clanging of his hammer on metal reminds him too much of the clashing of swords, Coastal will put down his hammer and leave his forge. He walks around the lair, the cool damp air and softly-lit halls a far cry from the burning Ashfall Waste. Shoreline sometimes joins him on these walks, her gentle presence soothing him. They talk about life in the clan and the latest news. Coastal has even told Shoreline about his past, though he gave only the briefest of descriptions. Coastal has fallen for the sweet Shoreline, and hopes that she will agree to be his mate one day. He also likes to visit the nesting grounds from time to time. While hatchlings are frightened at his scarred appearance at first, they soon learn to love this gentle giant, who carefully holds them and allows them to ride on his back. Coastal hopes that when he has hatchlings someday, he will teach them to love peace and gentleness as he does now. All Coastal wants is for him and his clan to live a happy, quiet life. |

Exalting Coastal to the service of the Tidelord will remove them from your lair forever. They will leave behind a small sum of riches that they have accumulated. This action is irreversible.
