B I O G R A P H Y

Maristela was born in a small Arcane clan, taking after her mother heavily in terms of looks. Like many Arcane clans, her birth clan held a fondness for space and the study of celestial bodies, and Maristela fondly remembers the time spent stargazing with her clan as a hatchling, listening in rapture as her elders picked out planets and constellations in the night sky.

As she grew older, Maristela's love for the stars only grew. She dedicated herself to the study of astronomy, focusing exclusively on the stars - their formation, movement, and placement in the sky. Her star charts became well-known for their thoroughness and accuracy, and she made a decent amount of coin selling her star maps to dragons who travelled at night. As her astronomy skills grew, Maristela took up astrology as a side hobby - she didn't really believe that the stars could tell one's fortune, amazing as they were, but the star fortunes were fun to make anyways. Maristela would calculate a dragon's fortune based on the position of the sun, moons, and constellations during their hatching, then she would read it out to them and they'd both have a good laugh.

Then her predictions suddenly began coming true. A few days after she had foretold a Spiral that something precious would be returned to him, his familiar came home after running away weeks earlier. A Fae who would bring great honor to her clan was exalted to the Flamecaller. A Bogsneak predicted to suffer great misfortune broke his leg two hours later. At first Maristela brushed them off as mere coincidences. But as the number of "coincidences" grew, she began to wonder if she really did have powers of prophecy after all. In order to be sure, Maristela travelled to the flight that knew the most about fortune-telling: Water.

While traveling through the Sea of a Thousand Currents, Maristela came across the Clan of Roaring Waters, who offered her a place to stay after hearing her story. They also believed her name, Maristela, meaning "star of the sea", was a sign that she is supposed to be part of the Water Flight. The Clan of Roaring Waters had many seers and oracles from different flights who might be able to help her, and they would promise her a warm bed and food as long as she contributed to the clan. Tired of wandering and grateful for their generous offer, Maristela agreed.

B I O G R A P H Y

Maristela has a cool temper and a sweet disposition, though she is so passionate about astronomy she can talk about the stars for literally hours before realizing that her audience has either tuned her out or gotten lost in all the technical details after the first 15 minutes. Maristela is very focused and can get lost in her work, forgetting to eat or sleep until someone comes and reminds her. She is grateful for this last part, as back in her old clan everyone else was too lost in their own projects to look after their own health, much less each others', and Maristela is touched that this clan cares about her that much. She has a steady hand and a sharp eye for detail, both very important traits in her line of work. Since the stars are only visible when dark, Maristela has become practically nocturnal - studying and recording the stars by night, and sleeping during the day. While Maristela was skeptical of fortune-telling at first, meeting all of the oracles and seers in the clan has broadened her horizons. She now believes that scrying and Foresight are real, though she still isn't sure how she developed the gift, as she wasn't born on an auspicious date, near a magical hotspot, or into a family known for producing strong seers. As all Arcane dragons do when facing something inexplainable, Maristela has decided to thank the Arcanist.

Maristela has since become the clan's chief astronomer. She creates star charts for clan dragons who travel by night, such as Seaweed and his crew of fishers, or Asha when traveling to sell his wares. Her star charts are especially important for navigation over the Sea, where there aren't many landmarks to go by. However, Maristela's main work is still observation - most of her star charts are made as reference for herself as she studies the constellations and night phenomena of the Sea. Because of her work she has built an observatory in the Clan of Roaring Water's land base so she can have a clear view of the stars. Maristela also spends time in the clan's main lair to improve her astrology by comparing notes with the other seers and oracles, so she is constantly traveling between the Tsunami Flats and the Spiral Keep.

While the clan already has an Arcane representative in the form of Winterflower, Maristela exclusively studies the space aspect of Arcane while Winterflower focuses on the magic aspect. Winterflower likes Maristela because her joining freed Winterflower up to do more magical research, and Maristela likes Winterflower because she is only one who understands even half of what Maristela is talking about when the Bogsneak starts gushing about space. The two of them get along well, and can occasionally be seen together discussing topics such as how the positions of the stars affect mana flow, or catching up on the latest news from the Starfall Isles.
