Kuga was a survior, but sometimes he didn't feel this was a good thing. He had three mates in his life, only the first of which still lived, if you could call perpetual hibernation living. He had tried to visit her once, when the others were gone, but the entire Clan had gone into the hibernal dens in such a deep slumber that they could not be roused. The structures of the Clan were crumbling around the dragons ignorant of their surroundings. There was nothing Kuga could do. Every single one of his children from these unions had perished in one way or another, or taken their vows to serve whichever deity they thought would protect them. Kuga hadn't been able to save the sick ones, or defend the bold and unfortunate from fatal accidents, he couldn't blame the others for seeking protection from someone more powerful. He roamed for years, without purpose and without joy. He went into his own deep hibernation, wondering if his first mate, Caritas, had felt something like this when she went into her great sleep. He didn't think he would want to be woken up either. He was tired and old and scarred. It was very easy to fall asleep. "Hello?" Kuga grunted and opened one eye. His body was too stiff to move. He couldn't say how long he had been asleep. He was looking at the foot of a Snapper. "Sir? Let's get you somewhere more comfortable. A nice meal too, how about that?" Kuga sighed and closed his eyes. "Sir? This area isn't safe, there's going to be a landslide, we need to get you away from here." Still, Kuga did not move. He was ready to accept a landslide, it would have been better if he hadn't been woken up for it. "Come on!" The Snapper began pushing their head beneath him, sliding him onto their back. Kuga could feel them panting from the effort, and he wasn't sure how they expected to carry him. "Can't you do something oh Great One? You told me to come here." The only response was a deep croak, but then there was a slowly growing light that Kuga could perceive even when his eyes were closed. He opened them to a pulsing blue energy. "You waited for me to pick him up before levitating him? Thanks." "A frog?" Kuga muttered, looking at the small amphibian perched on the Snapper's horn, humming as it performed its magic "Yeah. Or maybe not. I'm not really sure. He has magic and knowledge, and chose me for some reason. And now you. We came here for you, I don't have the answer for that either but it's not right for you to be up here alone." Kuga had to close his eyes against the warm, earnest depths of his companion's gaze. They were a young dragon, full of hope and life, but Kuga couldn't accuse them of naivety. There was a deep wisdom in those eyes. Kuga found himself settling into the home Clan of the Snapper, Bodhi. He wasn't used to such a lively, full and happy Clan. It had been a long time for him, so he kept to himself but he stayed away in a quiet little corner of this paradise. Bodhi was his company, and they were enough. They didn't find the answer as to why the frog had guided Bodhi to him, but they did form a close bond. Kuga didn't believe such a powerful little being would lower itself to becoming a matchmaker but who knew? Part of Kuga was fearful of such a connection given how all his other families had ended, but he had lived alone and in darkness for too long. Meristema was all life, and it was hard to resist. He would not waste what he had, and Bodhi was kind, gentle and understanding. Equipped with a leg and body support to aid his movement, Kuga hadn't felt so alive in a very long time. Still, it wasn't a surprise to him when Bodhi's first clutch only had a single egg. Despite all of Bodhi's strength and goodwill, Kuga was still weak. It came as a complete surprise when their next clutch had five eggs and Bodhi just grinned in a I told you so way. Their six children are sensitive, lively, caring and healthy. Kuga still hears from those who have moved to new Clans, and although he had been anxious about his children at first, he's now very glad to have been given another family. |
