Marina, Part 1, Interlude
Love song.

~

A cool breeze chilled the air one night, ruffling the sails of the ship, but neither of the two dragons aboard were cold. The little waves of the Sea gently rocked the boat as the Spirals spoke to each other.

“Think ye can handle a few moments alone while I discuss our next routes with the queen?” the orange Spiral, Octavius, asked.

Whelk smirked. “You mean sneaking around the castle again to get Bryony alone?” He let loose a yelp as Octavius' tail smacked him.

“Don't be daft,” Octavius snapped. “Y'know as well as I do that she doesn't want to see me.”

“Why does she hate you again?” Whelk asked, rubbing one cheek with his paw.

“That's none of yer business,” Octavius said, smiling and pinching Whelk's cheek. The suctions on Octavius' palm stuck for a moment before releasing. When the orange dragon turned away, he said to Whelk, “Watch my ship.”

Whelk leaned back against the railing as he watched Octavius leave. Something then caught his attention in the corner of his eye, and turning to look he saw a rosy gull staring at him. It squawked once.

“And what are you laughing at?” Whelk sneered, shooing the bird away. Leaning back again, he adjusted his goggles.

Where the waves rock you to sleep...

Whelk froze, swivelling his ears to listen. Had he heard something?

...and a voice calls from the deep...

He did. He heard soft singing, and he turned around the face the sound and the open water.

...with your love we will not drift apart...

His eyes turned round from behind his goggles at what he saw. He gasped once, gripping the side of the ship so tight his claws dug in the wood. He couldn't move.

“...if you give up your heart,” sang the small figure rising from the water. Pale gold locks draped her finned neck and shoulders, and her round blue eyes stared directly into Whelk's above her.

Whelk lurched toward her, then froze again. He dug his claws deeper into the wood and his three hearts pounded wildly. “H-hello,” he said to her, his voice quaking.

A slight smile appeared on her delicate face. “Why so nervous, Whelk?” she asked him.

How did she know his name? Did it matter? “Y-you're so beautiful,” he blurted. “A-and...I-I have s-something for you...” he added, leaning down closer.

“Do you?” she asked curiously, her smile stretching as the water began to lift her up to him. “My name is Marina.”

Marina...” Whelk hushed her name. “I want to give you...” he trailed off, raising one paw to his chest.

“Give me what, Whelk?”

“My...my love...I love you...”

“You do?” Marina raised herself closer still, reaching for his tunic. “I'm sure you wouldn't miss just one of your hearts, would y—”

“WHELK!”

Something gripped the back of his shirt and yanked him backwards. Whelk tumbled down on the deck in a tangled heap, shaking his head. He now stared up to the orange shape blocking his view of Marina.

“How dare ye show your slimy face here again,” Octavius spat to Marina, brandishing his cutlass.

“What's wrong, Octavius?” Marina said, feigning a pout and letting the water lower her back down into the Sea. “Don't you still love me? After all you gave me one of your own hearts,” she added, grinning with pointed teeth and licking her lips as she spied the single scar on the orange dragon's chest.

“You thieving wretch,” Octavius snarled. “If I ever see you in these waters again, yer pretty little head will no longer sit on your filthy neck and we'll be havin' ourselves a fishy feast,” he hissed, his cutlass shining.

At the sight of the sword, Marina's eyes widened and she dove backwards with a light splash. Octavius glared after the mer-Fae as she swam, until he no longer saw her slender form. Sheathing his cutlass, he turned around to help Whelk back to his feet.

“Octavius, I—” Whelk started.

“I should've warned you about the dangers of the Sea,” Octavius stopped him.

“But—thank you. What was that?”

“She calls herself Marina, I assume she told you already?” When Whelk nodded, Octavius continued, “She's a siren, taking the form of a dragon and singing to those unaware of her intent. She feeds off the love of foolish dragons by stealing their hearts and eating them.”

“Ah...oh.”

This was why Bryony didn't want to see me again,” Octavius added, pointing to the scar on his chest. “She thought I truly loved Marina after she heard me confess feelings for that...thing.”

“And she really took one of your hearts?” Whelk asked quietly. When Octavius gazed back at him with an unreadable expression, Whelk wondered, “Have you ever tried telling Bryony what really happened?” Octavius didn't answer, instead rolling his eyes. Whelk grinned. “You went to see her, didn't you? I knew it.”

Aye,” Octavius said impatiently, waving one suckered paw. “Enough of that.” Once more, he looked towards the expanse of the Sea. “I just hope Marina isn't in alliance with Maelstrom,” his voice hushed.

“Who's Maelstrom?” Whelk asked him.

Octavius didn't respond for several moments. When he spoke again, he was quiet.

Death.”
