the beginning

____Carriers of unfortunate names can become self-fulfilling prophecies. A cruel or careless parent may bless an unwanted hatchling with a hopeless name to take him through his years, be it a curse or a dismissal. At his birth, Hollow has been gifted with emptiness, the rattling sense of neverbelonging. There is no ridding yourself of a name set to guide your future. All there is to do is to grow past it as much as one is able.

Hollow is a solitary, reticent dragon, and prefers listening to talking. He believes he has much more to learn from the world around him than he can contribute himself. He has a difficult past he does not want to think about too closely, and a name that's set him feeling unfulfilled and restless as long as he can remember. One isn't harder to bear than the other. They both tangle together into a complicated knot of intricate little strands of recalling the past and expecting the future, but if one tries to unfold the mess, the strings tug too sharply at old aches. He leaves it be, and hides it from others. It's for the best.

Hollow led a solitary life until he met Tern, someone else who had struggled with forming connections with others all their life, and somehow these two dragons so many had deemed difficult or inconsequential found companionship and security in each other. It may have been because in Hollow, Tern found someone who seemed to be able to love her without reservations just as she was, and in Tern, Hollow found someone who understood him without him having to spell it out in words. Someone who would let him be when he needed it, someone who thought the way he loved was enough.

Tern might have continued a solitary life serving nobody but herself and not struggled with it, but Hollow, despite his withdrawn manner, was never going to be happy with an existence like that. Perhaps Tern understood. Hollow often thinks he was the first lost dragon Tern took under her wing, his keening desire for companionship and belonging the thing that, in the end, made her stay. He became hers, and they became one, a family and a place to welcome others who felt as rejected as they once had.

They built a home in the lush woods of Viridian Labyrinth. For many years, Hollow felt almost happy. Almost like he could settle here, almost real. And then the restlessness came. His dreams and waking days pulled him away, the once familiar ancient woods feeling hostile more than a refuge. He'd grown roots, almost learned what it's like to stay, and found it was not right.

When he realised what he must do, Tern was with him. Vigil came, and as did Vigil so did Gyr. Their daughter stayed with her love and the hedge witch, as it should be, he knows. It aches, but not to hurting. She has found a home for her heart. It's what she should have.

He keeps searching.
