Biography

Anika

Good things come to those who wait, they say.

Anika and her mate Marcus hunt for the clan, making sure that the food stores never run empty, and no one in the clan ever has to go hungry. Anika prefers to hunt with patience and forethought, baited ambushes, nets and snares, things that allow her to lie in wait. Marcus prefers to use speed and agility when he hunts, swiftly chasing down prey and outmaneuvering them, whether on the ground or in the air. Between the two of them, they can bring back an impressive array of prey, and keep the clan fed. Although they have their favored methods, they've learned each other's tactics as well, and can easily assist each other if need be.

Anika came to the clan from Dragonhome, and she has retained many of those traits that characterize the Earth dragons of her homeland, particularly a down-to-earth attitude, and a reverence for traditions, well-kept records, and history. At one time, she aspired to the position of historian, but found the job too sedentary for her. Although she enjoyed browsing through libraries and learning about the past, she enjoyed being outside and doing something purely physical just as much. She couldn't see herself spending all her time sitting and reading without wanting to leap up and fly, which was rather a prerequisite of the job.

However, her interest was caught by the thought of joining another clan, one that wasn't as old as her birth clan, and still creating their own history. Perhaps one in a different region, who wouldn't expect the same strict standards of their historians as earth flight did. She packed her inks and parchment, and set off, excited to find a new clan. She found the traveling different than she had expected. Her home was a dry, dusty region where the sky stayed clear more often than not. But she traveled through regions full of cold mist and thorny brambles, or constant lightning storms, and she found herself having to adapt to the harsher climes and different landscapes. Keeping herself sheltered and fed was more difficult than she had anticipated, and yet she felt a certain sense of pride whenever she caught her own meal, using an old diagram of a net or snare she had found in her research. Still, she promised herself she would settle down somewhere temperate and beautiful.

After all her wandering, she finally found herself in the Windswept Plateau. The sky was bright blue, with gentle breezes pushing around a few fluffy clouds, the grass was soft beneath her feet, and the wind whispered through the bamboo groves like a friendly voice welcoming her. This, she decided, would be her home. She would find herself a meal to keep her strength up, and then focus on looking for a clan. She was sure that the prey must be bountiful here, and she sought out the nearest water source for a little fishing. To her surprise, she found someone else already there, a wildclaw with orange stripes much like her own. She meant to leave him to his own fishing, but he gave her a friendly wave, as though to let her know she could stay. So, she took out some line and a hook, dug up a few worms for bait, and cast it out into the water, a distance away from the wildclaw to ensure that neither of them scared each other's fish away.

The other dragon, she couldn't help but notice, had no line or nets to help him fish. Instead he was standing stock still in the water, gazing down as though waiting for one to swim by. Even as she watched, he leaned down swiftly, and came up with a wiggling fish in his jaws, which he deposited in a basket he'd left on the bank. Then, he returned to his waiting, still as a statue again but with a sense of coiled tension, ready to spring with the swiftness he'd displayed earlier. She would have watched more, but she felt a tug on her line, and set her own attention back to reeling the fish in. She carefully pulled it onto the bank... and noticed out of the corner of her eye that the wildclaw was watching her now. When she set it aside on the bank and cast her line out again, she couldn't help but notice that he dove for another fish shortly after, bringing his catch to two. By the time she pulled in a third and saw him almost immediately dive again, and miss, she was certain that he was trying to outcatch her.

She had always had a little competitive streak, and she was proud of her new won skills, enough to be certain that she wasn't going to let him beat her. She put all her effort into it, watching the line like a hawk and searching for the most tempting bait, pulling in fish after fish. She saw he was doing the same, moving faster and sometimes even ducking under the water entirely to chase them. She got caught up in the challenge, losing count of how many they both had caught in an effort to stay ahead of him. But the time the fish had stopped biting, she realized that she had gotten so caught up, she'd pulled in more fish than she could eat.

She was a little embarrassed when the stranger came over to introduce himself, until she caught him looking sheepishly at his own overfilled basket. Still, he had a bright demeanor that reasserted itself after a moment, and he cheerfully invited her to bring her abundant catch back to lair with his, and help feed all the dragons there. He promised her that their cooking would be worth it. There was something about his bright personality, and the cheerful gleam in his eye, that made her agree to go back with him. The lair greeted their catch with joy, impressed at the amount that was brought back, and Marcus made sure that Anika got her fair share of the credit. That night, surrounded by good food and happy dragons, she decided that this was the place for her.

Anika spends much of her time hunting for the clan, and although she and Marcus still sometimes get drawn into competition over who can catch the most, she takes care not to get too caught up in it. She and Marcus are careful to hunt in different areas each day, to go after the weak or ill, and not to catch nursing mothers or herd leaders, to ensure that the wildlife in their territory stays abundant and healthy. She considers herself as having a responsibility to look after the animals on their territory as well as their clan. She still gets a chance to work as a historian a bit too, recording the populations of every creature, predator and prey alike, and their eating habits, interactions, and behavior, creating something of a natural history of their territory.

See? There's no need to go rushing off.
