They always say the same things and it's starting to get old
That my head can't get sick
It can't catch a cold
I scratch and I pick
My insecurities poke
My fears, my anxiety, a voice that provokes

If one ever had any questions about the importance of family, one merely had to look to Valdis to understand how deep that importance lies. Valdis had come to the Tangled Wood as an adolescent and had quickly found a home with the Carnival of Woe. For the many moons to follow she would learn their ways, their secrets, and quickly earned her place amongst them as a talented mage. She had nearly forgotten about her home until one day when the past came back to rear a head far uglier than she'd remembered.

She had sat in one of the brilliantly colored tents, practicing her routine and entertaining some of the hatchlings when Apachu came sprinting in, his chest heaving with breaths as he struggled to get his words out.

"Come now, my talented friend!" She'd chirped, grinning as she sent a shower of fireworks raining down on the hatchlings who all squealed in delight. "What ever is the matter?"

"She's---Your---" He took a deep breath, "Valdis, I'm so sorry."

She felt her stomach drop. "What? Apachu...What are you saying? My what?"

"Your mother has passed, Valdis. I'm so sorry." The tightrope walker's face was taut, his eyes screaming apologies that would amount to nothing. She felt a numbness begin in her legs that enveloped her whole body. There wasn't enough air in her lungs. She struggled to stay upright but the room refused, spinning and whirling until she found herself on the hard dirt below.

She had loved her mother, had mastered her own magic as a way to honor her lineage. She was the perfect mixture of her parents in appearance and she had always been so proud. She could not bring herself to look at her reflection now. It was her mother that stared back.

Just gotta find the light switch
But the more that I look the further I get
You're the only thing about me that needs to be fixed
Cuz on the first page of life written in fine print
Stop looking for light, live it instead

____It did not take long for her heart to be shattered once more. It was Zurie, this time, that brought the news. Gentle Zurie. She had known both Valdis' parents, considered them among her friends. When the Coatl came in, her headdress long left to the wayside, it didn't take long for Valdis to piece together that she was about to be shaken once more.

"They were attacked. I'm sorry." Zurie sat by her side, clearly shaken to the core as well. "Your father died protecting your siblings."

Valdis was quiet for a time. When she finally spoke, her voice with thick with emotions that threatened to destroy her, "And my siblings?"

"They survived. Yona is keeping your sister--raising her."

"How did it happen?"

"Beastclans. There was a massacre it was...horrible, I'm sorry. I tried--"

"You tried?"

"Valdis, I'm sorry. You and I both know my visions are as reliable as rain in a desert." She sighed heavily, "By the time I got there it was too late to warn them. The carnage had already taken place. All I could do was help with what little I could and come back here to tell you about...what was left."

Valdis took this in, nodding. Again after a time she spoke, swallowing heavily, "Might I meet her?"

"They may need time--"

"I want. To meet her." The words were harsher than she intended but she could not help it.
Her heart ached for her family, for her loved ones. She did not want the little one to grow up alone.

"I will ask." Zurie cast her a soft, pitying expression. Valdis did not have the energy to be angry.
She only had the energy to weep.

In the days to come her performances grew fewer and fewer. She tried to muster the energy and fantastical whimsy she once held on stage, but all she had inside of her was a profound melancholy. It weaved it's way into her performances, turning them into performances on the true depth of sadness. Onlookers were captivated, but this was not the performance she had been hired for.

Nessus and Asmodeus took her off the performance roster in two weeks time. It didn't take long for her other duties to the Carnival to take a back seat to her grief either. Soon her usual task of judging souls, just like the rest of the carnies, was beginning to be left behind. Her judgements were lax, her punishments even more so. The Lady and Lord of the Carnival soon took these responsibilities away from her too.

Valdis was left alone in her tent, the Carnival of Woe's forgotten mage.

____”Valdis?" The voice was gentle, prodding as it was. The Imperial raised her heavy head,
looking to the source. A Skydancer stood in the opening to her tent, beautiful orange,
blue and purple wings tucked neatly against his body. His outfit mirrored hers but in more extravagant, regal colors.

"What do you want?" The words were harsh but had no bite to them. They seemed to barely register on the Skydancer's face as he stepped in, each movement careful.

"My name is Cyrus. I'm your new assistant."

"I don't need an assistant."

"The Lady and Lord seem to think otherwise." He sat a few feet from her, prim and proper like a statue. She snorted.

"Nessus and Asmodeus just want me to continue to make them money."

"They seemed to imply otherwise." He gauged her carefully and she nearly cracked under the scrutiny.

"They have other judges." She said finally, certain this must be what he spoke of.

"They want you." He ventured, "And me, it would seem."

"Since when did they start recruiting strays?"

"If what they've said of you is true, likely when they recruited you." His words weren't mean or cold. They held a matter of fact sentiment that left her wishing they would boil blood instead of speak a hollow truth. She regarded him coldly for a few minutes and he did not speak, barely even moved.

Finally she broke the silence. "If I am to be in judgement once again, I want to know who I am judging and why. I want no more secrets. I...don't want to think that I may not be making my family's legacy a proud one."

"Nessus thought you might say so." From his hip he produced a scroll that had been so neatly tucked away the Imperial hadn't even noticed. "This scroll details the souls to be brought to us this week and everything about them. We will receive a similar scroll at the beginning of next week, and thus forth."

"How do I know it isn't useless fluff?"

Cyrus smiled, a sight that caused something nameless within her to stir. She quashed it immediately and without mercy. "Zurie wrote it herself. I've been assured you know her?"

"More than know, I trust her." Slowly Valdis pulled herself to her feet. "When are we to begin again?"

"Tonight." He flashed a grin and that same emotion stirred in her chest. She couldn't hate anyone but herself for it.
