SCRIBEUBIQUITOUSTONGUE-IN-CHEEK

A soft breeze, an open window, a warm cup of tea—you take in the hospitality and the scenery around you, an odd yet comforting mixture of eclectic dragons and eclectic decor. Outside, glowing lanterns punctuate the beauty of the sunset over the Zephyr Steppes. As the clans of the wind prepared for the evening, the strong winds began to calm, but short gusts sporadically rustle the bamboo outside. A particularly strong blow stirs the curtains of the small library; on the desk before you, the pages of a book flutter. You peek slowly over your drink, the ornate pages catching your eye, and begin to read...

A soft, tickling sensation on your ankle wakes you from your dreamlike state. You don't know how much time has passed since you began reading; the large, gold-etched book lies open to the very last page. The sunset outside had faded to a deep purple hue, and it seemed that everyone but you had returned to their chambers for the night.

You slowly become more aware of your surroundings, and you startle when you begin to make sense of the shadowy figure sitting at the desk across from you. The skydancer smiles slyly back at you, as if she had been waiting for you to notice her presence all along. "Not the most observant type," she remarks. She scribbles something down in a leather-bound notebook. You have a feeling that whatever she is writing about is about you. "I'm pleased that you found my book so... immersive," she says, her voice laced with genuine gratitude.

You give her a soft but hesitant smile, still a little bit unnerved at the thought of being so unaware. But she seems harmless enough, and if she really is the author of the book you just read — well, a thousand questions are burning in the back of your mind. You figure you should first ask her name.

A long moment passes before she answers, in which she readies her quill and turns to a new page in her journal. "Lanterne," she finally responds. A grin tugs at the corner of her beak, and something golden sparkles in her shadowy eyes. "Nevermind such trivial things. Tell me, who are you?"

Lanterne is the ever-present clan scribe; if any dragon thinks they can escape her quill, they are mistaken. Lanterne's shadow nature allows her to slink about unnoticed, quietly taking note of Corona's members' personalities and activities. Fear not—her intentions are far from devious, and it would be much more apt to say that she is very, very dedicated to her job. Take one look in the archives at all of the clan members' biographies, and you will feel quite a sense of admiration for the skydancer's craft.

If you do happen upon all of Corona's records, you will recognize Lanterne's distinct style. Though she does her best to stay true to reality and objectivity, her writings are all imbued with a cheeky tone, poking fun at her clan mates' many idiosyncrasies (in a light-hearted way, of course).

When it comes to her clan mates, Lanterne actually holds a lot of respect and empathy for those around her. Not everything is on the books, and the scribe has no qualms about putting away her ink when it comes down to personal matters. Lanterne is almost as good at giving advice as the old and wise Coyotito, and through personal experience, the skydancer has learned how to deal with life's misfortunes and injustices. In fact, Lanterne's whimsical and silly tone stems from her desire to both escape and challenge life's darkness — an effort to brighten up the shadows, if you will.

As the clan scribe, it is Lanterne's job to write about others; consequently, very little has been documented about Lanterne herself. Of course, Petal knows more than most — yes, even more than Lanterne. Unfortunately for curious souls, Petal is quite the secret keeper, and inquiries will often be met with a blank expression and a monotone voice stating, "When I met Lanterne, it was raining," and nothing more. It is simply accepted that Petal and Lanterne met long, long ago in Corona's earliest days at a time when Lanterne's troubled past was still lingering in the shadows.

What about that troubled past, you ask? Well, dear reader, you might have forgotten that I am the author of all — yes, even my own biography. An unreliable narrator, you say? Ah yes, I suppose you might question anything you've read so far, and you are quite right to do so. Perhaps that is the fun of it all... but trust me, dear, none of it is far from the truth.

Now, I must ask again: won't you tell me a little bit about yourself?
