Aelynthi
I watch the stars forever more
Here on this lonely night
Goodbye, my love
Goodbye, my dear
For now, I have taken flight

"How could I have been lost, Mazus, if, in the process, I found you?"

l3kRBf2.png

She had no recollection of who she was. All she knew is that she ached, deep in her bones, and that she could not move her wings. A figure was moving above her, murmuring to her in urgent tones. "You need to wake up. Please wake up.” It was odd. She could almost swear at least three different voices.

Groaning softly, she rolled over on her side. “Thank the deities.” The array of voices spoke again. Blinking slowly, she finally opened her eyes, waiting a few more moments until her gaze finally focused on the dragon above her, a nocturne who was also the source of all the voices.

“Are you alright? Are you hurting?” he trilled softly, shuffling around her, his face etched with concern. She didn't know how to answer him. She didn't know the words he did. She barely remembered one.

“Aelynthi,” she croaked softly, not realizing how sore her throat was until now.

He stopped short. “Aelynthi?” he repeated, using the exact same voice as her, his tone unreadable.

Eyes widening in shock, she repeated herself. “Aelynthi.” She didn't know why, but the dragon using her voice intrigued her. It pulled faintly at memories still too far gone for her to remember.

The nocturne hummed gently, using his one of the voices he was using before. “Do you know how to say anything else?”

She didn't understand. She only knew from his tone that he was asking her something. Blinking, she lay her head back down, absolutely exhausted.

“You've forgotten,” she heard him murmur above her. “You're practically a hatchling again.”

She fell asleep. She didn't know when she next awoke, but he was there again. She noticed her surroundings better this time.

A grove of trees surrounded her, the sunlight just barely glinting through the leaves and creating dappled patterns on the nocturne from before.

“You probably can't understand me, Aelynthi, but you slept for almost a whole day. I was worried. You should be feeling better though now?”

The purple and gold nocturne padded over to her, running his claws lightly along her back and wings. She was too tired to protest. “You were very badly injured when I found you, you know. Your wings were nearly impossible to fix, though I think I've managed to bind them correctly, and they'll heal enough for you to use them again.”

She looked over to where he was still touching her. Her wings were wrapped in cloth, binding them tightly enough to her sides that she couldn't move them.

He sighed a little and curled up against her, and she realized now that he was smaller than her. “I wish you could talk.” The vibrations of his voice against her neck felt familiar, as if he'd done it before.

They lay like that for a long time, until he finally shifted, careful of her injured wings. He pointed to things, and named them, and slowly, she learned his words for them. “Rock.” “Tree.” “Dirt.” “Twig.” “Leaf.” Finally, he pointed to himself. “Mazus,” he whispered quietly, again in that unreadable tone.

The word pulled at her mind, tugging on faint strings that lead to nothing. “Mazus,” she repeated quietly, tasting the word on her tongue. He nodded, smiling faintly, as she repeated the word again.

They spent several days like that, the magic in her healing her wounds slowly as Mazus taught her more and more. She learned quickly, each new word familiar and yet not. She still did not remember who she was, but she was fond of who she was becoming.

Eventually, Mazus brought her back to his clan, and they welcomed her with open arms, the two mirrors in charge watching her carefully. The ice blue female approached her first. “Welcome, Aelynthi,” she purred, her electric blue eyes glinting. Aelynthi, as that was her name now, dipped her head in acknowledgement, expressing her gratitude. She was not yet comfortable speaking around anyone but Mazus, who she’d come to think of as her nocturne.

She grew comfortable in the clan, and learned more and more. Mazus was often nearby, helping and watching. He was her finest teacher, and she learned nearly all the dialects of draconian that he did, though she did still have some trouble speaking with the coatls. As they spent more and more time together, she grew fonder and fonder of him. She enjoyed the familiar warmth of him curled against her side, or the tell-tale swish of his tail when he was excited for something. His presence was comforting, and always the first thing she could remember.

He, too, seemed to be as fond of her as she was of him. She received the first of many courting presents from him on a sunny morning, before she was fully awake. He was dangling a small white and blue pocket watch in front of her, as the morning dew danced across the grass in Wispwillow Grove. “It matches your eyes,” he murmured softly as she finally accepted it. Her pleased purr was his only answer.

His second gift came several days later. She’d nearly stepped on the small painting he’d left her at the nest they often shared together. Her breath caught in her throat as she stared at the gorgeous portrait of her looping through the air, laughing as she flew in between clouds. She barely recognized herself. “Do you like it?” Mazus had startled her, as he was once again using a voice she didn’t recognize.

“Yes,” she chirped, smiling gently as she turned back to stare at the picture once more. “I do.”

His third and final present came several weeks later. A small green and gold brooch, swirling with the colours of her magic, rested against her claws when she woke up, Mazus in front of her looking tired and haggard.

“I’m sorry about how I look,” he whispered, finally collapsing against her. She covered him with her wing, fretting and nearly forgetting the small magic imbued brooch. “That was a present, given to my mother by my father, and later passed on to me,” he continued, his eyes jaded as he left his question unspoken.

She stared at him for a long time, and turned to look at the small, but precious trinket. She took several moments to think about the curve of his neck against hers, the vibrations that seemed to pass through her and awaken the butterflies in her stomach when he spoke. He seemed to be nervous, waiting for her reply, as if it weren’t already obvious.

“I accept,” she nearly sung, her voice rising in a warble near the end as she couldn’t hide her pleasure in his action. He threw himself at her almost before she got the words out, loud pleased rumblings vibrating through both of them.

“I thought I lost you,” he cried, almost too quiet for her to hear. She could feel his tears against her face as she nuzzled him. Though the reason for his emotions were a mystery as always, she did not want him to cry. Especially not when they were supposed to be happy.

"How could I have been lost, Mazus, if, in the process, I found you?" It was rare that she spoke affectionate words, as she preferred to express herself with action.

It was enough, though, at the moment, to make him stop crying and nearly leap back in surprise. He chirped and squeaked happily against her, too surprised for words. “Say it again,” he finally demanded, a lilt to his current voice giving away his happiness.

She only chuckled and curled around him, pleased that her mate was happy again.

"I'm sorry."
l3kRBf2.png
She shivered with the pain, trembling with the spasms ripping through her body. He was next to her again before she even knew it. "It's okay," she whispered hoarsely. "I'm okay." The voices in her head pounded against her, trying to shred her mind from within when it became obvious she wouldn't give in.

"Liar." His voice was muffled, but she could feel the vibrations of his rumbles through the pain. It soothed her, though she was still hurting. She felt his tears before she heard him. "I thought we had forever," he whispered, his voice breaking with his grief.

"We do." Wincing, she intertwined her tail with his. "Of course we do. I'm still here aren't I?" she crooned softly, whispering just loud enough for him to hear, knowing he needed her to keep talking for as long as she could. "We'll have so many hatchlings, you'll lose count, my dear."

She heard him sniffling slightly before he moved from her side to face her, a smile on his face despite his tears. He played along. "As if I could ever lose track of children."

She laughed, desperately trying to not let her voice break, to keep looking at him. "And you and I will teach them everything you taught me."

He shifted closer to her, pressing his face against hers. "Of course, though your coatl still needs work, my love."

"You can teach me," she purred quietly, ignoring the buzzing in her head that was growing louder with each second. "We still have time."

He opened his eyes then and started humming melodies that weren't discernible in the slightest from the coatls of their clan. "Can you tell me what that means?"

She shook her head slightly, with difficulty, too overpowered by the voices for a moment to speak. "Tell me?" she finally whispered, shuddering imperceptible to all but the nocturne curled around her.

He nuzzled her gently, covering as much of her as he could with a wing in an effort to stop her shivering. "It was a song I heard once," he finally sighed, whispering into her ear. "And a prayer."

You are my sunshine
My only sunshine
You make me happy
When skies are grey
You'll never know, dear
How much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

She sighed a little, enjoying his singing despite the somber mood that fell over them. "You'll sing that for me again won't you?"

"Always," he continued whispering, humming tunelessly again. "I'll sing whatever you want."

"And we'll build our nest somewhere by a river near Wispwillow Grove," she smiled, flicking his tail as the voices pressing in around her grew more urgent.

Another tear escaped from his eyes, and she found herself crying through her smile. "That's where we met. It's not usual for you to be this openly affectionate."

"Isn't it normal for mates to build their nests in places special to them?" she asked, snorting a little.

His reply was cut off by her pained shriek.

"Aelynthi. Aelynthi!" He called to her frantically, scrambling to get closer to her.

"Stay back! Don't touch me!" she snapped, hating herself for it as she viciously shook him off. Her magic crawled around her like ants, dark and tainted, as she hacked up black tar-like goo.

"Don't go," she heard him whisper from somewhere, but her eyes were already closing. She could still hear him calling her name as her sight darkened to nothing. She didn't know if he could still hear her or not.

"I'm sorry."
