Once upon a time...

He had always loved that phrase, even as a hatchling and barely old enough to read. It meant wondrous things could happen, would happen. Perhaps a princess would need rescuing, or an alien lost on a foreign planet, or even some great monstrous being that just wanted to be friends.

Once upon a time...

Anything was possible.

It didn’t matter that it was all fictional, that the other kids rolled their eyes or threw rocks at him when he read for far too long. It’s boring, they said, running off to do something more fun and exciting than staring at letters on a page. Don't you do anything else?

But for Cerussite, it was more than enough.

The books become larger and longer, picture books to chapter books to novels and more. Still, the magic never quite faded. There was always something new to explore, something to learn and see and experience.

And then he grew older, and he had less time for once upon a times.

Still, he thought about it. The phrase stuck out to him even now, years later. When he spent his days firmly grounded in reality, no longer looking out the window and daydreaming of far away lands and kingdoms, no more days of cracking open the newest book and losing himself in the adventures of someone else.

Once upon a time... he grew up. Once upon a time, he didn't have hours and nights to spend flipping through pages and getting lost in a story. Instead, he spent his days doing his best, trying to keep himself afloat in the never ending grind day and in and day out. Once upon a time, he lost the magic of his youth.

Still, he cared for it, yearned for it, gazed at all the books on his shelves he'd never gotten around to reading, stared at the dusty library display corners touting best reads, and wondered what new worlds awaited him had he only had a chance.

Once upon a time, Cerussite took a chance and straightened the sign on his newly minted bookstore, the sun bright and shining through the window onto his crowded store display. The air was heavy with the scent of old books and parchment, the soft rustle of pages as they were flipped through by casual browsers. And Cerussite watched a new generation fall in love just as he had once upon a time.

So this is Cerussite. He's a pretty nice guy. There's nothing really going on for him. He likes reading, was probably picked on as a kid, and since then he's kinda just done his thing. He's that guy who kinda goes through life without making any waves. He has friends and acquaintances, and no enemies. Or if he does have enemies, then it's someone he's not even aware of. Like maybe he accidentally forgot to hold the door open for someone, and that caused someone to walk into it which is fine, 'cause the guy wasn't injured. But the guy who walked into the door ended up falling into this other guy who then slipped on the wet floor and was thrown out the window and horribly injured. So now this third guy has a villainous backstory where he swore revenge against people who don't open doors for others all because of that one time that it happened to him and ruined his life forever. But also, he can't trace it back to Cerussite, so Cerussite's safe and doesn't have any enemies.

Cerussite's pretty open and sweet. He accepts everyone for all their differences and similarities. It doesn't matter if they're big or small, of if someone decided that they'll only eat pancakes for the rest of their life. Like, who's going to judge? Certainly not Cerussite.

H i s t o r y
Cerussite's not really sure how he ended up in Shadow. Which really isn't the way you want to start your introductions with someone. "Hi! I don't know why I'm here, but here I am!"

People mostly just assume that Cerussite had his nose buried in a book and somehow walked all the way from Nature to Shadow without noticing, and then he finally put down the book only to find another one, and lo and behold, here he is. In this clan. Surrounded by murderers, thieves, corrupt leaders, and the occasional normal dragon who looks in askance at everything around them and wonder, "Why am I still here?"

Cerussite runs a cute little book store that almost no one really goes to. Which is kind of disappointing. Sure it has its few regulars, but compared to the popular shops and taverns, this bookstore is a ghost town. It had the novelty factor at first which really boosted business, but after a while people kind of stopped going there. Somehow Cerussite's still able to make ends meet though no one's really sure how. People think maybe Lyneth has something to do with it? But the fact that they rarely see the two together really doesn't seem to make much sense.

Either way, Cerussite has his very own bookstore where he can be surrounded by what he loves. And he's perfectly normal, thank you very much.
