“Some dragon makes the world special just by being in it.”

Cheryl is a princess. Perhaps not a literal princess, perhaps sometimes not even a figurative princess in her own heart, but there are dragons who would argue the point until they collapsed in exhaustion. Cheryl is a princess to the heart of Finn, her mate. Any dragon that has met her agrees that her sense of duty to her clan, her friendly attitude to the dragons she works with, and her clever sense of practicality make her likeable to everyone else in the clan as well.

Even though she doesn’t talk much about her past, everyone knows that it must not have been very pleasant. If she’s told anyone the extent of her past, it would be Finn. She has many other friends in the clan, due to her sunny cheerfulness and because her willingness to help anyone in need of it. Her job as the clan’s hostess is to make sure visiting dragons and beastclan members, whether they are dignitaries or not, are well fed and comfortable during their stay, and everyone agrees that Cheryl is perhaps the best dragon to do this job. She is a quick friend, and very difficult to ruffle. Perhaps her past has something to do with this.

If any dragon is concerned with the past, it is Cheryl, though one might not realize it to watch her in her day to day activities. She has an excellent memory, and should any dragon visit her clan again, she is likely to remember their every request and preference from their earlier visit and provide for this before they recall to ask her. She prides herself on her ability to make her guests comfortable, and the clan is just as proud.

.....

Cheryl looked up. Finn’s stare was penetrating, and she really should have expected his concern. He was sweet, unlike a few dragons that Cheryl could think of right off.

“I know I won’t think any differently of you, no matter what it is,” he offered quietly. Finn paused, shook his head and finished, “It makes me sad… to see you sad.”

She smiled a little, shook her head. “You shouldn’t be sad. It’s silly, really.” After all, Finn was an attentive suitor… And since the night was over, it was time to return home. There was no guarantee something like this would ever happen again.

“If it’s making you upset, it’s not silly.” Finn sounded so sure, stomping his little foot on the ground, maybe to make sure she understood.

Cheryl shook her head. She didn’t want Finn to make any decisions because of pity for her. Cheryl’s family wasn’t exactly the type of environment she wanted to return to. Her siblings were all far more beautiful and intelligent than she. Her mother viewed her more as a servant than a daughter, but Cheryl didn’t mind. She had moments like this, and sometimes that made up for the emptiness she felt all the other times.

Finn sighed when it was clear that Cheryl wasn’t going to share any of her thoughts right now. “Well…” he said finally. “No matter.”

“What do you mean?” Cheryl asked. If he thought that he didn’t matter, she had to set him straight.

“I mean, whatever you’re upset about, I have a question to ask you.” Finn hesitated, as if whatever he was about to say was difficult. Was he going to send her away? Tell that he liked her, but… “Would you like to stay with me?”

The force of a feather could have knocked Cheryl over. “What?”

“Would you like to stay with me?” he repeated with a small smile. “Here, in this clan. Would you…?”

“Yes.” She hadn’t meant to speak so quickly, sound so relieved. But she was. “Yes, I’ll stay.”

“Good.” Finn shifted to sit closer beside her. He rested his head on top of hers and said, “I love you.”

Cheryl heart bubbled up in joy. “I love you, too, Finn.”
