You walk into Naal’s tea shop one day, seeking a warm drink and a quiet place to enjoy it. As you enter the building, however, you nearly collide with a nervous looking young Pearlcatcher just leaving the counter, a cup in one hand and a book clutched under her wing.
”Oh gosh, I’m so sorry! Excuse me!” she cries at the startle.
You wave her off with a smile, and she scurries off to one of the low tables in the room, still looking sheepish. When you leave the café a while later, she looks up from her book as you pass, and gives you an apologetic wave.
As you think back on the moment later, you realize the book she was reading was much darker than you’d have expected by looking at her.
You get the feeling your first impression of her might have been incorrect.
---
Palua was not meant to be an only child. There were three little eggs in their clutch, each touched by their mother’s strange magic. Araya found great power in celestial bodies, so she found the same power in her soon-to-be children. The first glowed bright gold, so it was the sun. The second shone silver, reflecting the light of the eldest, so it was the moon. The third, although it carried no light of its own, clung to the silver one with such conviction that it must’ve been their own little copper planet. When they hatched, Araya and Aata celebrated with their new family solar system.
Then, they were thrown out of alignment. Zuda, the planet, the youngest, was sickly, and eventually passed after a few days of fighting. Their parents mourned, but the children were too young to understand their grief.
She and her older brother Aludra grew up attached at the hip; they were raised on the road, traveling between their parents’ performances, and often only had each other for company. Aludra helped the naturally shy Palua break out of her shell, and in exchange she helped keep him on track when he grew bored during their schooling. When Araya and Aata introduced them to music, the pair took to it like ducks to water, much to their parent’s excitement. Palua enjoyed singing, while her brother preferred instruments that accentuated her vocals. In all other scenarios, Palua was perfectly content to remain in the shadow of her brother’s sunlight.
The next tragedy didn’t strike until Palua was older. One day, while the pair were out playing, Aludra’s confident nature became his downfall. He’d spent the day attempting more and more outlandish tricks, and on the final one, the rocks gave out from under him and dropped him down a cliff face. Palua, in her panic, was first unable to stop him and later unable to locate her parents in time. Aludra never woke up after the fall, and eventually succumbed to his injuries.
Now thrust into the limelight, Palua’s world was thrown on its head. Her parents suddenly babied her, eager to protect their remaining child, their little moon all alone. They pushed her to follow music, since “she used to love it so much.” Meanwhile, Palua grew to dislike singing, when every song reminded her that she no longer had her brother’s instruments behind her. In an effort to help Palua cope with the death, her parents decided to settle down in Stormhaven and abandon their life of migration, but left the place Aludra was buried as a result, further deepening her grief.
In her efforts to avoid things tainted by Aludra’s memory, Palua threw herself into different hobbies, eventually settling on writing. Creating happy endings for her characters allowed her to work on herself as well, and reading for reference provided new worlds to dive into.
At the depths of her grief, Palua’s frantic reading introduced her to necromancy. She promised herself she’d never turn to that, but couldn’t deny that the idea had settled in her head. Tidepool and Morrigan helped dig her out of her rock bottom; meeting Tidepool taught her to find joy in music again and gave her someone else to be with when she needs quiet, while Morrigan’s training is building her self confidence and teaching her healthier coping mechanisms.
Slowly, Palua feels like she’s getting better. Her parents are starting to listen to her about not wanting music to be anything but a hobby, and she has a journal full of writing and a wonderful girlfriend willing to read it. And hey, if she glances at a book about necromancy once in a blue moon, it’s not anything more than a passing curiosity, right?
She still desperately hates being an only child.

- - - - ▸ Familiar Bio
Since both of Palua's parents have Streaks as familiars, it would be expected that she would follow the trend. They even offered to buy her a Fallout Streak, so that it would match her colors. She almost accepted, but instead fell in love with a Steam Gyre when the time came to find a familiar for herself.
Nostradamus is just as quiet as his companion, often found sitting and watching the repetitive motions of Palua's quill as it moves across paper. Although he is not a songbird by any means, he enjoys cooing along when Palua hums while she works, and occasionally dances when she sings to him.
The one downside of having him as a familiar is the humidity that comes with his steam. When his presence begins to warp the paper so much that even waterproof inks can't function, Palua takes him and her work outside, allowing him to fly about without disrupting her and allowing her to enjoy some sun. Sometimes, she suspects that he purposefully gives off more steam than usual when she's been cooped up for long periods of time, but she does enjoy the fresh air, so it's a bit of misbehavior she'll allow.
