Biography
Vinen the Undertaker nothing lasts forever Theme: From Where You Are |
━━ story ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Vinen didn’t close his eyes. He never closed his eyes if he could help it. She was there when he did. Sometimes she was smiling. Sometimes… she wasn’t. If he waited until he was so tired he could no longer see, waited until his claws were weighted with exhaustion and he couldn’t even lift his fins to show how utterly miserable he was, sometimes he could sleep. “Are you going to answer?” A pause. “Hey, you okay, buddy?” Vinen squinted past his blurry vision at the pilot. The Wildclaw’s nail clicked on the deck of Cloudsong’s pier while he waited. Waited for Vinen to say something. “Yes,” Vinen said finally. “I’m ready. I’m sorry. Long, um… long day.” He kept his wings comfortably folded against his back and crawled onto the balloon's gondola. The Wildclaw watched like he’d never seen a Fae on all fours before. “Whatever you say,” he said uncertainly. “Alright, that’s everyone!” he called to his partner Spiral. The Spiral just clicked and batted her wings in response, scurrying about the riggings. Vinen pulled himself up to the edge of the gondola and looked down at the steppes below. It was a long way down… a long… long way… He slipped back behind the wall and curled up to wait for the landing. He didn’t know why he wanted to go down to the surface anymore, but he was already here. It was work. Work was good, distracting. And it would get him away from here. Away from the pitying glances and accusing stares. It wasn’t his fault. It wasn’t. Vinen covered his nose with his thin tail, the tail ring sitting just behind his crest, and closed his eyes. There she was again. At least, if the earth was below his feet, he could try to bury his past. Bury it. Bury everything. |

━━ history ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
|
Little is known about the Fae that joined the Tempest Chase on a whim. He was initially brought down from Cloudsong by Dameron after living there for quite some time. His first step onto the Steppes after his own tragedy was to bury a daughter after some other violent tragedy he begged not to know the details of. He refused the offer to stay in their guest aerie and instead stayed outside under the Cloudsong. He spoke to no one, certainly not the grieving family, as he went about his work and helped select a suitable location for burial. When a group of dragons appeared for the burial rites and to give support to the parents and niece of the deceased, Vinen only barely came out to speak to the other dragons. After performing the service, he stayed out late to plant a rose on the site. Fortunately, Vinen’s services are rarely required by any single dragon clan, so he travels from clan to clan to offer his services. He is an expert in the most common burial customs; Vinen prays to all the gods, offering flowers he grows. Vinen has seen to the burial of entire clans after a devastating attack by out-of-control wild animals or even hostile Beastclans. More frequently, he helps pick up the shattered pieces left behind by those who’ve left. He keeps a level head in tough times, often appreciated by the families of those parents, siblings, children he helps bury. Otherwise it seems like he has no friends, sitting in silent company with dragons that also don’t particularly like constant talking. In fact, for any dragons other than Faes and those versed in Fae fin language, Vinen says close to nothing at all. Perhaps he’s broken somewhere beyond where eyes can see. Somewhere beyond the capacity to patch together. Vinen doesn’t speak about his past, even less about his Plague heritage. He doesn’t seem to mind being surrounded by death and its ideals. He maybe romanticizes it, planting a flower for every dragon he buries. Or perhaps he’s just memorializing a little-held recollection. Sometimes, when pressed to speak at mealtimes, he’ll recall a story of a dragon no one else remembers, and look hurt when no one shares his reminiscence. Perhaps he has the best memory, and worst curse, of all. |
