Always the smallest dragon, pale beneath her markings, and sickly. She didn't want to be like this, always tired, always the last picked, always the slowest. Astheneia struggled to live as a hatchling, every breath was taxing and as her wretched body laid in the nest she could not help but wish for death as she listened to the squawks and screams of her playful siblings. Each passing moment she teetered between life and death. So the sickness overtook her. Hallucinations raced through her mind, she had no sense of time or space between the bouts of sickness wracking through her small body. It was there she met Aurak . Aurak had felt her tortured spirit needed assistance in the afterlife. However, when he reached her, he did not find a spirit. He found a broken, sick hatchling clinging to what little life she had left. Aurak felt compelled to heal the little hatchling and took her in as his own. Astheneia did not know what Aurak did to heal her. There were whispers of dark magic and when any dragon saw her they quickly passed, fearful of catching any reminants of the magic that may still be inside her. As such, Astheneia had plenty of time to herself and her biggest enjoyment was reading the ancient scrolls in the archives, gaining as much knowledge as she could possibly attain. As Aurak watched her intelligence develop, he decided she would become his first apprentice. At night, when the rest of the clan was asleep, he taught her how he raised spirits in order to comfort them and guide them through the process of death. Aurak was undeniably good at his job, but Astheneia wanted more. She wanted to raise the spirits of the oldest dragons to learn their secrets and wisdom. She wanted more, more, mo- “Stop” Auraks voice boomed in the cave as she realized she had been whispering to herself. “We will not misuse our power. Maintain the balance and keep the peace.” But peace was not to last. |
