► HISTORY
Templeton was born to a noble family of a now-nameless kingdom many, many centuries ago. Most members of his family were powerful Nature sorcerers, and he was no exception. He was groomed as a court mage, schooled in the magical and courtly arts. Much of his early life was uneventful. He had perhaps two arranged marriages, both of which had already ended by the time Queen Heurodys proposed to him. Templeton had known the young queen for some years, owing to the time he had spent at court, but he hadn't expected to be chosen as her consort, for he was many years older than she was. He was delighted nonetheless, and the two of them were wed. The marriage proved to be a happy one, and they produced many children together.
Beyond that, however, life was not so happy for Templeton. His mate, while not a bad dragon, was also not a good queen, and the kingdom became weak under her rule. The people grew dissatisfied, and alliances with other countries dissolved. King Templeton and the royal ministers were hard-pressed to keep the kingdom running smoothly. Inevitably, war came.
The King and Queen managed to escape the capital city before it was captured. Their children had left some weeks before to defend their kingdom, and Templeton and Heurodys waited in a distant town for news of them. The princes and princesses, all ten of them, returned as corpses. Heurodys was inconsolable, and it looked as though running the kingdom would be entirely in Templeton's hands now. He was in a meeting with his advisors when the terrible news came: His wife was dying of grief and slowly merging with their dead children, turning into an abomination that they had until then thought to be a mere legend -- an Emperor.
While the rest of the populace fled in terror, Templeton confronted his wife. He used his magic to tear her and their children's corpses apart and begin burying them. In the throes of her madness, Heurodys struck back. Too late she recognized the king -- by then, she had mortally wounded her mate. The Emperor was no longer a threat, but both Templeton and Heurodys were now dying, and he forgave her even as life left them. His last living thoughts were of the kingdom and the need to warn others that Emperors indeed existed.
Templeton's spirit was reawakened when a hunting party from the Disillusionists accidentally stumbled into the remains of his kingdom. By then, most of the valley had been buried, with only little stone shrines to mark where the royal family's corpses had once lain. Templeton himself had forgotten his name, instead opting to name himself after the town and the shrines (which resembled temples) that dotted it. He shared his and his mate's story with the Disillusionists and asked that they be left in peace.
The valley has been concealed once more, and while Heurodys often slumbers, Templeton stays awake and aware of the outside world. He doesn't have much interest in it, and remains on guard lest any visitors ask his mate the wrong questions and reawaken the grief that nearly doomed them all.
► CHARACTER Like many nobledrakes of old, Templeton is dignified and gracious, well-spoken and polite. It is easy for many dragons to not notice -- or to forget -- that he is a ghost. He still wears the magnificent robes and jewels he held court in, and visitors swear they can sometimes hear the cloth rustle, the jewels clink, as the phantom king reclines upon his throne. Much of Templeton's later life was filled with pain. He struggled to help his wife run her country, taking on more and more duties over time while shielding her from the hardships plaguing the land. Despite that, he remained deeply devoted to her and to their family. He still harbors great love for her even though she is literally a shadow of her former self. He will answer for her when she is not inclined to speak (which is most of the time), and will skillfully steer the conversation away from any topics that might hurt her. She forms much of his world, which is perhaps only right, since neither of them can leave the valley they died in. Other dragons may find this dreary, but Templeton has seen a lot of hardship in his life as a king, and he appreciates the peace he has in the ruins, boring and stagnant as it is. He will frequently ask visitors about what is happening abroad, but he is really doing this just to be polite -- he has no interest in lands and matters beyond the valley, probably because he knows they have nothing to do with him and he can't do anything about them. Perhaps because of the odd nature of their deaths, he and Heurodys are still able to produce children -- not in the standard fashion, but instead by mingling their magic. Occasionally one of them will slip and start remembering what their lives were like before, thus triggering memories in the other....Their strange, half-alive children -- more like thoughtforms than actual spirits -- are the result. Templeton cares for these phantasmal beings as best as he can, teaching them what he knows about the outside world before they are inevitably sent away. He is always gentle, even friendly, towards them, but withholds much of his affection, for fear that he will be consumed by grief as his wife was all those years ago. He interacts with few other beings. The hired illusionist, Lamprey, is one; he may also speak with the occasional passing Disillusionist. He is warier of dragons from other clans and is not above lying or acting intimidating to make them leave if he thinks that they are getting too pushy. |

► RELATIONSHIPS
Lamprey | Illusionist To keep the valley safe and conceal it from intruders, the Disillusionists hired Lamprey. The Flamescale Serthis doesn't mind the damp, humid jungle, preferring it to the scorching heat of the Volcanic Vents, and he regularly patrols the valley perimeter, making sure that his concealment spells are still in effect. He doesn't enjoy conversation, so he and Templeton get along just fine. |
► STATS & ABILITIES
While not skilled with melee weapons, Templeton is a powerful sorcerer, and his magic has offensive capabilities. A favorite tactic is to accelerate the growth of nearby foliage, turning them into hideously powerful mutants: lashing vines; stabbing branches; and grasping, strangling roots. Templeton is unfortunately limited by both his range and nature: His magic cannot reach very far out of the valley, and being a ghost, he can be easily silenced or weakened by spirit wranglers. _______________________________________ |
He gets one point for remaining in the mortal world, but other than that, he is quite dead. He is completely uninterested in the affairs of the living and will rouse himself only when they intrude upon his domain. Even then, his interactions with them aren't too exciting and get downright boring at times. _______________________________________ |
He was a very powerful magician when he was alive, and this hasn't changed much after his death. In addition to using his magic in combat, he also regularly employs it to defend his valley, coaxing the surrounding plants to grow into walls and creating labyrinths to discourage intruders. He also manipulates the foliage to continually repair the walls of his home. His resistance to hostile spells is weak, however, and skilled spirit-wranglers should be able to subdue him with their own armaments. _______________________________________ |
A well-schooled dragon who could learn more if he wished it, but he no longer sees the point and isn't interested. He is a good authority on Nature magic, diplomacy, and courtly etiquette, but dragons hoping to learn from him should be warned that much of his knowledge is outdated and unlikely to evolve. _______________________________________ |
If one isn't deterred by his being a ghost, Templeton can be quite amiable. He is a good conversationist who can also shrewdly assess other dragons, and is very much in control of any discussion that takes place within his valley's walls. There have been cases of dragons attempting to interview him, only to realize -- too late -- that they have agreed to leave him and Heurodys in peace and are now being shown out the door. There are some determined folks who can avoid getting bamboozled by him, but when Templeton realizes he is being outmaneuvered, he will simply disappear, good manners be damned. _______________________________________ |
He has always done his best, but he rose to power at a bad time and was unable to smooth over the conflicts that arose. Death came to him at the claws of his mate, and while the afterlife hasn't been too bad for him since then, it doesn't seem to be getting better either. _______________________________________ |
