❁ STORY

With heritage like hers comes a… complicated relationship with the law. On the one claw, her family was of esteemed standing and so Zayida has more than a little nobility in her blood and a right appreciation for a top down view of the world. But on the other, her father was a criminal who built his mining and trade empire on the backs of his poor misfortunate working class. All of which she took great offense to when she found out.

The combination of which makes her very good at convincing folks that she’s an upstanding citizen… even if she has less then noble intentions. Which she sometimes does. Her distaste for what her father did has lead her to attempt to bring other corrupt leaders tumbling down. That’s how she met Blacklight (and Zayida is one of few privy to her real name and not the alias). And when she needed a place to stay where questions would not be asked and pursuers would not be tolerated, the Reliquary took her in. Now Zayida works with Crossfire as an ambassador, with Denara as a peacekeeper, with Aphid as ~~a spy~~ a fact checker, with Blacklight and Venin as watchers, and with the mith smiths of the clan as an enchanter.

Sometimes her talent for enchantment (a skill lauded as being the primary magical gift in the Ashfall Waste and something she excels at) is used for the wider clan. Enchantments come in useful for Pencil and Tahvi, they can add benefits to the products sold by the lair, and can tie protective magic more securely to locations. She paid her way across Sorneith by enchanting items, applying boons to jewellery that would bring luck or happiness, buffs to armour and weapons to make them less likely to break in combat, and runes on farming or crafts tools to make produce of higher quality. And when she arrived at the Reliquary, she continued this practice by offering to enchant their crafts. It’s a skill she sells to guests as well, for if they have a trinket of personal importance, she might bless them with fortune, fair winds, or the ability to always find their treasure.

It's things like this that make it hard to believe she also dabbles in the less savoury work of the clan. Yet she believes that often the most successful individuals have something to hide. And Zayida is not fond of dangerous secrets. ~~Ironic, for a spy.~~

ORIGIN / From the broiling planes of the Ashfall Waste, Zayida has the demeanour and colouring to match her fiery homeland. The difference is, she’s not much for smithing or mining or any of that stuff her clan was so interested in. And when her father’s corruption brought him tumbling down well… she wasn’t into mining anyway. She renounced any inheritance he might have left her, not wanting to touch his spoiled coin, stopped by the great lavaflow palaces of the Hearth, and bid her home farewell without so much as a backward glance.

Fact / Blacklight was actually behind her father’s fall from grace. She exposed the working conditions of his labourers to some of the right folks and ruined her family. This was particularly hard to stomach when Zayida considered her a friend. Blacklight wasn’t there for long, it was a job and nothing more (rumour has it, another mining faction gained much from her father’s decline), but the betrayal hurt no less for that. Finding herself in the lair Blacklight calls home was a surprise, but she’s never been asked for forgiveness. Doesn’t know whether she could give it anyway.

Likes / Music is a favourite of Zayida’s. She can’t play anything, but she has a pleasant enough singing voice and adores listening to Callana. She loves wide, clear skies and the freedom of going wherever she wants. Despite her dislike of blacksmithing, the smell of the clan’s furnaces are comforting; she just likes the atmosphere.

Dislikes / Those who abuse their power over others for personal gain. Exploitation for profit makes her mad, it’s why she sets aside her differences with some of the dragons in the Reliquary and works with them. She’s often a little at odds with Anthelion for her talents and how she uses them, too. Zayida can see the benefit, knows the potential dangers of alternatives, but she doesn’t like it.

Interests / Jewellery. There are so many applications for setting gems and working with fine metals. They make for excellent enchantable objects, as well. She’s also interested in blessing magics. Zayida’s enchantments and other (less well-known magic) allow her to bestow benefits on others and she’s fascinated by the notion that only the gods can do such things. The existence of the lair’s patron goddess is also an area she gets lost in her own head thinking about.
