the heat of the day burns.

the air is thick and arid, boiling away any sign of precipitation. it's hot enough to melt gold; the molten mixture drips down their wings, puddling below their feet and scalding the sand. she leaves behind a trail of golden droplets, little pools of liquid gilt. if this were anyone else, the blistering fluid would cause them pain.

not her, though.

she's long since lost the ability to sense the heat, their thick skin muting the high temperatures. scars run up and down their body like dried out riverbeds, with her hands being especially covered. her nails drip with gold, syrupy like honey.

calloused but not calloused.

they don't get to feel the warmth anymore. the heatwaves that mar the land embrace them like a heavy blanket, but they feel nothing but the pressure. she tries not to think about it too much - not wanting to ponder the whys and the what ifs. instead, they take the absence as a gift. she covers flowers and leaves in the metal, preserving nature's beauty. she doesn't let herself think too hard about what it does to the flora underneath. if the process burns it, kills it.

if it's killing her as well.
