At a very young age, Jellybean was abandoned by his parents on one of Starfall's chalcedony spires- structures that are known to be full of irradiated arcane energy. Although Jellybean is an Arcane dragon and thus has some natural resistance, even Arcane dragons should have limited exposure when young. Jellybean was not given this luxury.

Isolated and struggling to survive, Jellybean hardly noticed that his body was growing strangely- to him, it was his normal, everyday reality. It was not until Heartmuncher rescued him at the age of eight that he learned he was not at all normal.

The crystal growths on his body are not chalcedony, but give off the same sort of Arcane energy- energy that Jellybean uses to power his intricate magecraft. Other magicians can also draw on his energy- which has lead to more than a few attempts to kidnap him and use him as a magical generator. Luckily, all of these attempts have failed.

Jellybean believed he would be the only one of his kind until he found Tourmaline in the Spires- but that's a tale for another time.
