ABOUT.
Serafino, called Seraf or Ser by his friends, spent his early years under the watchful eye of his father. At the time he did not realize that the dragon who played with and indulged him far more than his mother was a warrior of some renown. When it came time for the basics of fighting, Seraf discovered he was no more than ordinary and indifferent to the skill. He begged to spend his time in the forges, instead. Cassius found a house of metalworkers willing to extend him an apprenticeship without so much as a word against his son's chosen profession.

Rather than subject Seraf to ongoing lessons in combat, Cassius instead brought him along on long flights into the Ashfall Wastes where they scavenged their own food and stretched their wings in peace. Seraf looked forward to these outings in between learning his trade and carousing with his friends through the streets of Ras. While it wasn't long before his parents were raising another clutch of his brothers and sisters, he became the preferred babysitter for the youngest. He fell into helping with any of his siblings who showed an aptitude for craft, since he had risen through the ranks of the metalworkers and knew or had collaborated with a number of the smiths in the city.

Seraf had just barely achieved his mastery when the head of the Smith guild, an older Coatl with the legendary tattoos of a Runesmith, approached him about attempting the still more difficult trials of the order. She outlined what he could expect and left him to make his own decision. It was not only his youth that recommended him, but the tricks of alloying and smelting he had used in his work. Seraf told no one of her offer until the day, years later, when the edges of his wings bore the hallowed markings.

Although he is not the youngest Runesmith in the history of the order, Serafino is the first master of his generation to pass the trials. He likes to joke that the most difficult and ongoing trial is deflecting his mother's giddy requests to access the restricted libraries. Ilene's expertise as a scholar of the weapons created by the Runesmiths did not quite fan her pride in her son to excessive heights, though he found it was a near thing, indeed.
