Biography

_________
Fickle
the hedge witch
━━━━━━━ ooo ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

____Fickle forages the edges of a forest pond, their pockets full of charms for good luck, potions for an aching back, spells for a rainy day. They spare a sideways smile to any passing traveler, and for a friend in need they always have a moment to spare. Anyone is welcome to come in for a cup of tea and a moment to lighten their heart of their worries, but in the long term Fickle prefers their own company. Visitors are welcomed, listened to, sent on their way with a helpful trinket spelled with good intentions warming their pocket, but they come and go like days of summer. Other dragons don’t tend to become fixtures in Fickle's life, and so they prefer it. Frogs and kelpies and other pond dwellers are their truest friends and allies.

Fickle has never cared about things such as gender - their time is better spent focused on things that are more substantial and at least a little bit important. To them, love and passion are mirages and fleeting pleasures of a fanciful heart. It's hard to remember that other dragons might be more than just passers by in their settled, solitary life. Only the magic of the forest is real.

A change brings an egg to their door - a glowing Light egg far from home. A portent bids they take it and keep it as their own, and a name-dream heralds the day of hatching. So Marsh is born, a sweet, joyful hatchling full of spirit, and so Fickle becomes Mother. The name proves well-chosen and the hatchling grows into a young dragon with senses thrown wide open to receive the magic of the world through the gentle, cool embrace of the forest and wetlands, the life that thrums everywhere and welcomes those who wish to befriend it.

Marsh has a talent for the magic. She drinks it in like a dragon parched. Her element could be a hindrance from learning the language of the forest as well as the magic requires, but whether it be her dream-name or her upbringing in the heart of the marshlands at the edge of the world, she is a keen and apt student and takes to it well and naturally. She is a joy to teach, and a joy to have as a daughter. Fickle is an absent-minded parent and teacher, easily distracted by things other than the young dragon they share their home, hearth and heart with, but Marsh seems to grow up well regardless of the ways in which Fickle surely falls short in the task of her upbringing. Love, easy and freely given, eases the way.

When the dragons whose dreams thrum with things best forgotten - though it never is quite so easy as that - leave their home grown too small and restrictive for their wandering souls, the daughter remains, and becomes another constant in Fickle's previously so solitary and quiet life. The girl Wren with her blazing love bring a strange trembling elation to the edge of Marsh's young magic, and Fickle smiles to themself at that. It's a strange flavour, one their own magic never has carried, and doubtless never will. It's interesting and new. It excites the trees around them, makes the marshlands shift in strange interest. Love is life, Fickle notices. Love is real, and made of magic.

Fickle likes their own magic as it always has been, more ancient mud and pondwater and half-unreal creatures than dragon, but the young lovers they suddenly find themself sharing their home with show them each day that just because something is strange to them does not mean it has no worth. Each day, as they watch Marsh learn more about her magic, they learn more themselves. It's exciting. It makes them wonder if perhaps solitude is not the only way to find oneself immersed in ancient magic of the world. Makes them wonder when they forgot that dragons are just as all other living things. They are laced with old magic long forgotten in words, they are eternal, and they are real.
