Fear of Moonless Night
Greater Horror
On the new moon, it feasts.
The moon would never actually disappear from Sornieth's skies, would it? It becomes invisible for a few nights every so often, of course, but you can still see it by the absence of stars in its place. But this is still Rakta's greatest Fear - that Sornieth's true moon will vanish completely from the skies and from her senses.
And so Fear of Moonless Night came to be. It crept into the waking world after Hiruko the dreamwalker unwittingly brought it the gift of consciousness and freed it from the nightmare realm. It took the shape of the first dragon it found, then hid until morning.
Fear of Moonless Night knew from the experiences of others that its name was not a Draconic one, so when it revealed itself to the rest of the clan, it simply called itself Moonless, and the clan accepted that as its name. It works in secret, to grow and feed on the fears in the other dragons. It is a small, less powerful Fear, so Fear of Moonless Night must use deception and trickery instead of pure magic. It will block and obscure Rakta's connection with the moon. As the Skydancer worries, the Horror feeds.
An egg laid outside the territory of the eleven elemental gods will not hatch: without their magic, soul never knits to body and the embryo inside withers and dies. Without an anchor, the little waiting spark of Mind that might one day have become a person slips away through the cracks in reality. Most are eaten by the pneumavores that lurk in the hungry Void outside, but a few--lucky or clever or both--survive and grow up to become predators themselves. Shade-touched, these lost souls lurk in the dreams and nightmares of dragonkind, feeding on their fears and growing fat.

Fear of Moonless Night slowly gained consciousness, sentience, as it chased the Pearlcatcher through a dark dream. It caught the dragon's tail as the dragon left the dream world, and a piece of Fear of Moonless Night was pulled through.
It was not large anymore. It could not be a fearsome predator here. It must take a better form. Fear of Moonless Night left the hollow where the red Skydancer had slept, and crawled over this new world in search of something it could mimic.
It came to a great mass of yellow and orange - dragon nests, smaller than the one it had left. It poked its face over the edge, and almost smiled at what it saw. It found an empty nest, and morphed its tentacled form into a new one. Dark matter stretched between stiffened appendages in a near-translucent membrane. Its body elongated into a torso, a long neck, and an even longer tail. The process branded blue streaks onto the dark form, but it did not care. Now it could blend in, and thrive in the unsuspecting dragon-clan below.
