Lobelia
Writer
Introverted | Shy | Intellectual
Lobelia has incredible intellect, having studied Draconic language since her years as a hatchling when she could hardly comprehend the texts which she was reading. Unlike the other intellectuals in the clan, however, she is not one for debate... Or rather, speech at all.
Although an incredible writer, Lobelia struggles with speech altogether, unable to take her thoughts and mold them into the sounds required. Although she knows them well, having studied words and their meanings so thoroughly, she's still blockaded by her unwilling body. Due to the effort required with other forms of communication, and the unwillingness of many to try to begin with, Lobelia has very few close friends.
She has a cavern of her own, but instead spends most of her time curled in a bundle of pillows and blankets she has acquired and put into a nook found in the clan's library. She's mostly undisturbed, outside of the clan's painter, Alyssum, who seems fond of a sunny spot found on the opposite end of the library.
She is the mate of Alyssum and a lesbian. Although initially against the painter's presence, her persistence on their communciation and understanding of Lobelia's more shy nature as well as her willingness to read her works have made Alyssum go from a close friend to a mate in a short period of time. She is also a trans girl.
Lobelia never entirely warmed up to others in the clan. It would be impossible for her to, all things considered, issues ranging from oddity of her company to impatience and cruelty that she could not bear. In time, however, she had much improved. It was not her speech that was fixed, no. She had to admit to herself she likely never would master the Draconic language, so strangely far out of reach no matter how she tried. It was her method.
She began to write. Page after page, until her hand was sore, she wrote her story. Her life, her hardships however small, and her joys, however meager. She wrote of her good intentions, her successes, her failures. Things she had never had the chance to speak, and likely never would… The joy and sadness in letting herself rest. She wrote of fantasy, of worlds she would love to live in, mimicking stories she'd read or creating her own. No matter what it was, she wrote.
She was able to write in peace, for the most part. Nobody else used the library often except for their bookworm of a leader and a quiet painter named Alyssum. On a rare occasion, Gale would borrow the library in order to get one of the few books she did not have in her own personal collection, but that was the majority of all who visited. That was, until the curious coatl, Alyssum, came over to see just what the skydancer had been working on.
“I hope you don’t mind,” she had spoke softly in a voice that was nearly musical, and Lobelia couldn’t avoid a twinge of jealousy, “but what do you spend all your time writing? I can hardly imagine all you have written in the time you’ve been taking.”
She reached for her pad of paper and pen again, carefully writing a hello and explaining that she was unable to speak. Frustrating as it was, it seemed there was very little chance she would avoid this conversation.Being shown the pad of paper, Alyssum nodded, and sat down besides her in her pile of pillows and blankets. “I didn’t say you could sit here,” Lobelia wrote, only partially joking. Alyssum only laughed.
Their back and forth conversation continued for hours, Lobelia carefully avoiding the topic of herself and Alyssum compensating by divulging nearly every detail about herself instead.
In short time, Alyssum became something similar to Lobelia’s first friend, and eventually, her mate.
