You center yourself. You feel the Pull, the impulse to leave and Search, but there is something tying you here as well, near to them and their clan, and you want to be a part of it. They've accepted you, and the fact you want to Change, so you can stay. He's Changed, but you haven't asked why. It's a personal matter, Changing is, so you doubt you ever will.

The skydancer steps closer on back legs, feet dipped in silver, runes rampant along her body. The heavy cloak she wears glows ominously, and you start to think this might be a bad idea. The Pull flares, agreeing, and you shake your head - get it over with, and you can stay. Sickly red eyes and deadly sharp teeth flash under her hood, and you try not to wilt.

She waves her paws and dances around you, drawing patterns in the coarse sand with her back paws as she chants in what you're sure is some made-up tongue. You nearly start when the ground starts to glow, the foreign symbol around your body a dangerous, sick red. The gaze from her dangerous, sick eyes freezes you in place, and she grins deadly amidst her chants.

The red light grows brighter until you close your eyes against it, and you know pain like you have never known it before. You howl, clapping your front paws over your snout, sinking into the ground and melting through the floor as she screams at you, running your nose through with a red-hot sword, slashing at your fins with a red-hot sword, impaling your chest with a red-hot sword.

You are curled up in soft cables when her laughter disrupts your sleep. You shift, grumbling; what she did had been beyond painful, and you still had to actually Change on top of it. Something brushed your muzzle when you moved, and you flick your tail at it; it brushed more. And speaking of tail, it felt strange, as if something had been attached to the tip of it. Your whole body felt strange, you began to realize, as you took stock of it. What was that on your back? And where was the comfortable feeling of your armour plates shifting? And was your head... lighter?

You opened your eyes and gasped, almost falling out of the nest of wires. The tip of your tail was furred as any pearlcatcher's should be; had you actually changed? Something shifted to your left, and your ears - ears! - flicked towards it. He was there, his fur shimmering, his feathers glistening, his scales shining, his eyes glinting. He nodded at you, his usually stoic expression relieved.




You carefully pulled yourself out of the nest, shaking off your strange, smooth limbs. You raised a shaking paw to your snout, brushing past your still tender whiskers, your still tender horn, feeling your mane instead. He flicked the tip of his equally tufted tail, walking out of the nursery. You followed.

He walks into the stockpile room, and you wonder for half a moment before you remember the crystal-like surface of the pool you drink from. He is settling beside it, and you sit beside him, your head bowed respectfully.

You are watching the still surface of the water, a strange pearlcatcher you know to be yourself looking back at you when something rustles behind you, making your ears twitch - definitely a sensation you'll have to get used to. you feel a gentle pressure on your back, a strange texture upon your relatively unchanged wings; it is him, his wing carefully curling around you in silent support.

You try to click your teeth in appreciation, but it feels as if you have a mouthful of honey. Disgustingly awful, metallic honey. You cough; something black and shimmery slips from your jaws with a plop onto the rocky floor.
