Assigned female at birth, Hanoi never felt fully at home in his body, or with the roles available to him. As a youngster, he vowed that he was actually a man, and would go about life as such. His first step was to join a holy order of healer-monks as a man. A few years into his training, he was outed as trans. The head of the monastery was willing to let him stay... but only if he was segregated from the other men, under the belief that he would lead the holy order into impure thoughts.

Hanoi chose to stay until he had completed his training as a healer, even though the isolation put a huge strain on his mental health. Once he had graduated from training, he packed up and left the monastery, searching for a job where he could live as himself.

He bounced between cities and towns for a time, never feeling fully accepted anywhere. Eventually, he came across the Cerillos Village. The village needed a healer, and he needed a roof over his head, so he set up shop there. He quickly found the Cerillos tribe to be some of the kindest, most accepting people he had ever come across -- excepting, of course, the disgraced former cult leader Ajra -- and so he determined that this would be his permanent home.
