Biography
Name meaning: The Japanese kanji for En (煙) means "smoke/fumes." Also, as a Chinese exclamative particle, ēn is a grunt of acknowledgment, parallel to a phrase such as "I understand."
Before he joined Clan Haven in the Zephyr Steppes and before he met Atsushi and became her mate, he traveled a fair bit. His first taste of adventure had started with his parents' travels around the Tidelord's realm - the Tsunami Flats, a neighbor in the Trench called Clan Wave Song, and even the Spiral Keep - but had gradually extended to the outer territories of Sornieth as soon as he had been old enough to explore on his own. At the time, he had greatly enjoyed almost aimlessly taking in the sights and experiencing the different cultures around him, and he'd once thought he might continue forever as Snappers were known to do.
Unfortunately, this journey came to an end when he was ambushed by a group of Raptorik outside Haven's territory and was severely injured - an attack his leg never fully recovered from. They descended upon him when he was alone and secluded, so there had been no one to call out to for help. He tried to fight them off at first, but it became clear that he was heavily outnumbered and at a disadvantage. He knew he wouldn't be fast enough to run from them and, being unable to fly, he didn't have the advantage of an aerial attack such as they did. All he could do was pull his wings around him tightly like a shield and hunker down until they gave up or left him for dead.
His memory is spotty as to what happened between then and his return to safety, but he and the founding clan members are sure it must have been something close to a miracle that he ever escaped their barrage. Somehow, he had managed to drag himself to the first clan he saw - small as it was at the time - and they took him in to aid in his recovery. Without a properly experienced healer in their ranks, it was up to the joint efforts of Sylph and Rosette to nurse him until he was able to walk on his own again. Perhaps if it hadn't been for them constantly checking up on him and making him feel welcome in their home, he would have shut himself off from social interaction. But as it is, he is grateful for their kindness and for the long hours of company Rosette provided him on his sickbed exchanging stories of their adventures.
Although they did a wonderful job with what they had available to them, En never made a full recovery as they had hoped. The entire experience drained his energy reserves, prompting his signature lethargy and seemingly constant need to sleep every now and then. But on days when his leg acts up, he sleeps the most to cover up the fact that he's not doing well.
Not only that, but because of his traumatic experience, En has developed more of a bleak outlook on life. Sometimes, he thinks it would have been easier if he had died on that day, since he can no longer bring himself to travel. Instead, he has adopted a "do-nothing" life because there isn't much point to worrying about being especially productive or finding some kind of life's purpose except for enjoying himself while he can.
At the time, he hadn't planned to actually stay with the clan that helped him, not wanting to be too much of a bother or a liability for longer than necessary. He figured he would probably leave again once he was healed and make sure to stay closer to more populated places this time (wandering from clan to clan wherever they would spare him some resources), but then sometime later in the healing process Atsushi showed up and he threw that plan out the window, deciding to make his residency permanent when Atsushi decided she was here to stay.
En has acquired most of his expansive knowledge inherently, through his initial travels, and by talking with various dragons that pass through his current dwelling. He likes having long rambling conversations about all manner of topics with whoever will listen. Sometimes, he'll even start talking out loud to himself while in the company of others about the first thing that comes into his mind with the hope of finding or sharing enlightenment on the subject. But, most often, it's because he's bored.
Atsushi tends to humor him when he does this, which is part of how they started bonding and eventually became close enough to become mates.
But of course that's not how all of his encounters go. En first met Io when his Grey River Flight apparently stole some of the Ridgeback's treasure, which was not taken as a light offense. En is convinced that the only reason Io didn't maul him right then and there was because he didn't put up a fight before returning what had been taken. To be honest, En would have given him whatever he demanded at that point because confrontations are a pain anyway, but the fact that it looked like a fight might break out was all the more reason to avoid it at any cost. After talking for a while, they became comfortable friends.
Before Ryuu entered Io's life, En used to fish for both himself and Io while he helped Io get more used to the water. Anyone watching him probably shouldn't be surprised, but it's still an astounding sight to witness this lazy Snapper stand waiting in the water until a fish comes along and then just swipe it up in his mouth in the blink of an eye. He says it has something to do with becoming one with the water and finding your "chi", but he seems to be the only one who can do it.
Despite all the fast friends he made with his clanmates, it took Kinshiro a long time to warm up to him - apparently taking strong offense to En's perceived laziness and being jealous of En's relationships with both Rosette and Atsushi. Which was something En didn't understand but never tried to contest because it would have involved explaining what really happened to him before he got here... and keeping that secret was far more important to him than proving some snot-nosed kid's preconceived notions wrong. Alas, the secret couldn't remain buried forever, so inevitably he had to give it up and clearing the air did everyone involved a load of good in the long run.
Sometime after he and Atsushi made a nest together, a discussion among their friend group prompted Atsushi to share that she thought it made perfect sense to sacrifice a mate for the sake of protecting a child... or self-protection, En couldn't help but add. Io and Ryuu were shocked, but En understood it entirely too well. He knows he wouldn't blame anyone for it when he had spent all that time under the barrage of attacks wishing that someone else would come along and draw the Raptorik warriors' attention.
After everything En has witnessed and survived, one might be tempted to suspect him of being unshakeable, but those who know him intimately in any capacity are aware of his strong fear of cockroaches. There's just something about them that doesn't look right and he is forever worried about one crawling into his mouth. Fortunately, there are plenty of insect-eaters around who are willing to help him if one should ever find itself crawling within his vicinity.
