“Red like roses fills my dreams”

As a self-acknowledged anxious wreck, Rosewell generally spends far more time nonverbal than verbal as a result of his tendency to lose his ability to communicate verbally in response to stress. Thankfully, the bees never ask him to talk while he’s stressed, and he’s happy to tend to them silently and let their buzzing dances lead him along.

Rosewell wasn’t always so anxious and prone to becoming nonverbal. In fact, prior to the Civil War and the Second Departure, he was quite chatty, bordering on gossipy. Whenever any new arrival asks about his condition, the older dragons often shush them and shoo them away before explaining: Rosewell’s tendency to chat resulted in a very long conversation between factions of new and old former Spirits, and because the Civil War erupted in the aftermath of some very tense conferences between the two groups, he holds himself responsible for “stirring the drama pot,” as he would have said if he were verbal. As it is, he’s happy to never speak again, as far as his anxiety is concerned; if he never spoke he would never have to worry so much about how much space he was taking up.

Now, he just wants to keep to his bees and pass out his honey while taking up as little space as possible. Alva half-jokes about how his honey is slightly bittersweet and perfect for tea in between pushes (literal and verbal) for him to eat because he so often “forgets” to, but if anyone were to take a closer look, they would see that bittersweet melancholy permeates everything he does, from making sure the bees are pollinating to harvesting honey.

Important Items

Mel often enjoys perching on Rosewell’s nose and seeing how long it takes for them to make him sneeze, especially after he goes nonverbal. Almost as often, it actually helps him come out of his anxiety and start speaking again. They often take it upon themselves to urge Rosewell into Rosie’s flower gardens to help calm his anxiety by invoking their position as his divine companion and using the excuse of making sure the flowers’ and the bees’ pollen and nectar needs are met.

Rosewell always makes sure to set aside a couple of honeycomb fragments for Alva and Verbena (and a few more for the younger dragons) whenever he harvests honey. It makes him feel better about taking up space whenever he sees either of them use his honey for their work and will sometimes use them as little tokens of good intent and apology when he finds himself in a position of needing to interact with others while nonverbal.

Rosie’s flower gardens are the only places where Rosewell feels completely at peace. With the bees’ need for nectar from a variety of fruits and flowers and the flowers’ need for pollinators, it would make sense for the beehives to be near the flower gardens, and that proximity makes him feel safe when he’s in them. Much like their bees and flowers, Rosewell and Rosie work in harmony and share a life of quiet bittersweet together.

Perhaps it’s because her work involves a drink that encourages socializing, or perhaps it’s just in her nature to chat, but Alva makes it easier for Rosewell by talking when he can’t. Every once in a while she brings new tea mixtures by for him to try, and so she can cross-test with the many varieties of honey that he harvests. With Alva, he still fears taking up too much space, but he also feels that if he does, then it’s because she thinks he’s worth the space he’s taking up. Alva hopes that he can apply this logic to the rest of the clan one day.
