Ullr remembers little of his first time as a being. A hazy memory of a shapeless, weightless self created from something else. He did know, however, that he was unnatural. Strange. Not supposed to exist.
Once the haze cleared, Ullr was uncomfortably aware of everything. His senses were sharp, his body light and the wind called for him. And the most uncomfortable sense of mourning lingered within him, making him wonder who in the world he was missing. Why he felt that way - he knew, somehow, that he had never lost anyone. He knew he was a blank slate, someone without anything or anyone to miss. Yet he mourned for something, for someone, and he knew it wasn't his own feelings.
The wind carried him down from the Fortress of Ends, gently showing him the way down to the forests. He landed gently, the still snow around him disturbed by the wind lingering near him. It was an odd thing, he supposed, and he felt the hollow mourning following him even then. But despite that, he held his head high and marched forth.
He wandered for a decent amount of time. He saw dragons freeze to death, saw their souls gently leave their bodies and wondered where they went. He learned from observing, seeing how travelers and creatures went about their daily lives. Loneliness was not actually something that bothered him, but curiosity rose within him. Despite knowing he was young, most things they did felt familiar. Like memories from a past life - memories that were not his, yet existed in him. It was certainly a strange situation.
After much wandering, following others around and watching, he followed a pair of traveling dragons to a lair nestled at the bottom of the mountain he'd been born on. And it wasn't the lair itself that caught his attention. No, it was a great Imperial. Ullr didn't have a second of doubt, then, because he felt it. She was like him.
Ullr observed, at first, and saw that the clan that lived there seemed to accept the travelers warmly. And so, drawing forth whatever bravery lived within him somewhere, he boldly approached the lair.
They welcomed him as well. Ullr was recognized as being the same sort of thing as the Imperial right away, his ghostly self making it fairly obvious. The first moments were rather overwhelming, even, and Ullr remembers little of it except a flurry of dragons, questions and information. It was a lot to take in. Too much, even.
As soon as it was over, he fled. Perhaps a silly thing to do, but stress didn't seem to be something Ullr dealt with very well. He let the winds carry him back up to the mountain, the mouring he'd tried to flee from intensifying. But then it was almost a comfort. It was familiar, at least, and felt far more like home than the intense onslaught of impressions from being around so many dragons at once.
Imagine his surprise when, after no more than a few hours, the Imperial from was carried up by the same winds that'd carried him. She smiled softly at him, but did not speak. Instead, she seated herself beside him on the mountain. Silent comfort, he eventually realized, merely offering someone to talk to if he wanted.
In the end, Ullr talked. He couldn't quite keep his mouth shut, spilling the confusion and mourning and lack of answers.
