Biography

Hopefully in the future Novis & his apprentices will scribe clan lore fully c:
C L A N . L O R E
Deep within Shadowbinder's Domain, a dark underground labyrinth of tall caverns connects the social spires of the clan.
The caves weren't the first homebase of these dragons; they've migrated many times since the birth of the progenitors. From Driftwood Drag to Wispwillow Grove and, now, the undergrowth of Foxfire Bramble.
This clan has only ever known Shadow's sweet embrace, and they pride themselves on unfathomable loyalty to the great Shadowbinder, much akin to every other clan under her watch — each thinking themselves to be the most loyal.

The borders of clan territory lie at the edge of the thick bramble, bordering the wispy grove. The thorny tendrils protects those within, providing an impenetrable barrier; that is why Adavar keeps their nesting grounds inside the bramble, protecting the fragile glowing eggs from egg-snatchers and hungry predators.
Near the nesting grounds is the training grounds, a dusty clearing where the young and old train themselves in preparation for the battlegrounds that litter Sornieth, in hope that they may either serve their clan or serve their god; or both.

The entrance to the cave sits on a stone shelf at level with the top of the brambles, emitting a faint purple glow. It is the light that draws the moths in: weary travellers, hopeful merchants, hungry creatures and the like. It is the light that wards away the swallowing darkness, and the moths that feed the flame.
Shadows play on the minds of those that are unfamiliar to them, and drakes raised in the dark find deep pleasure in aiding visitors to lose themselves entirely and become one with the hungering dark.

Descending just below the entrance, a small chamber cuts away to the left and a wooden door made from the same grey bark as the pine trees sits in the tunnel. It's a door only large enough to fit a young imperial. A stained glass panel perhaps not the finest work of Blacksand's glassblowers is fit into the rock wall beside the door and reveals a lavish interior of cushions, tapestries, paintings and lanterns accompanying fine wooden furniture that looks sturdy but somewhat clawed by hundreds of restless talons and is surrounded by a sea of crumpled parchment and scroll cases — the Keeper's residence, where upon she watches her children clamber to and fro from the obscured light to the dimly lit darkness.

A series of unlit tunnels that fade into the shadows grow more frequent the further the main tunnel descends.
It isn't far before the tunnel ceiling rises gradually away into Spire Cavern, the place where most dragons of the clan build their dens.
From its entrance, it's impossible to make out the far wall of the cavern.

Clear pools dot the floor, with stalagmites rising from their bases.
They cannot rival The Spire: the ancient stalagmite that twists up from the center of the cavern almost to the ceiling, which is littered with long, sharp stalactites.
Upon The Spire is where Adavar's permanent residents build their dens; other residents occupy the damp cavern floor surrounding the spire or inside deep holes carved into the soft walls.
The dragons of Adavar are ranked into 3-tiers along the height of the spire:
Umbral Point — The highest tip of the ancient stalagmite is where only the most important of Adavar hierarchy reside: the matriarch, advisor, generals and ambassadors. To make homestead at the umbral point means being chosen solely by Umbra or the Keeper herself.
Obscured Shaft — The hollowed-out midsection of The Spire is where the notable of Adavar reside: mates of those of Umbral Point, Imperial residents and other noteworthy figures. To gain access to these parts, one must only work hard or look good.
Shaded Base — The point at which the spire reaches the cavern floor is home to the lesser of the clan's kin: Imperials unworthy of Obscured Shaft and above, unranked Pearlcatchers, and other unstated breeds that have made Adavar their place of residence.

The clan was led for many years by their monarchs, and for all but a handful of Adavars residence this was the only leadership they knew. The sovereigns were kind and royalty were strong; this made the matriarchs dissolution of the monarchy all the more hard for much of Adavar and caused a mass exodus from The Spire. Some royalists were put to slumber under magic, and others left the clan entirely, most headed to their longtime ally of Dramatica to join their families.
As such, the clan is no longer eased in disputes by the presence of their majesties, and tensions run high in post-sovereign Adavar. Most notably is that of the tensions between Pearlcatcher and Imperial residents; Imps think that Pearls should not have a place among the top tier, and Pearls think that it is unjust that the top tier is predominantly Imps.
Other dragons stay clear of their bickering and mostly use small insults or pearl-snatching as a way to distract the two breeds.
Nocturnes themselves were not initially accepted above the Obscured Shaft, but Umbra's favour towards Hecate has swayed many members of the clan, and faith to their shadow mother's creation ranks higher than pride among Imperials.

Descend any deeper into the tunnels beyond Spire Cavern and even the most arduous of drakes can find themselves lost to an unruly dark that swallows light hungrily, unlit by any for many years.
The dragons of Adavar don't question the darkness of the caves, nor attempt to measure its lengths. The tunnels beyond could stretch all over Sornieth, but Shadow is all that matters to them.
The dark labyrinth of tunnels and caverns that form Adavar exist almost as their own realm... Energy seeps through the walls in such vast quantities that it would seem as if it were being siphoned from the Arcane region itself.

It is not the residents that feed off the bounty of the tunnels and the surrounding land...
It is the tunnels that feed off the dragons and their life.
But a pledge to their deity is a strong one, and they dare not move anywhere else.

Tired-eyed travellers, adventurers promised bounty, merry merchants who come to trade, tricked familiars and unwary hatchlings have all disappeared to the darkness like ghosts. They leave no trace. They are the moths to the ever-hungry flame, and the flame is the gurgling dark.
Eaten by the shadows... Consumed by the tunnels.

"Keep it fed and it shall not hunger for our own."
An egg or two is a welcome sacrifice to keep the swallowing shadow at bay.

N O V I S
To be paired with such a dragon as Abyss was both a blessing and a curse for clan Mage and courier, Novis.
He had hoped the denkeeper would not pick him to partake in such an event as the mating ceremony, and that he would remain free of mate and hatchlings to continue his duties in peace - but unfortunately, no dragon is exempt from the ceremony and he was paired with the infamous Abyss - a dragon of many words and harsh nature.
It only made things worse when out hatched young Nebulo, the most adored hatchling and admired dragon since the creation of the lair. This worsened Abyss' snootiness when she could claim that she was the progenitor of such a fine specimen, and all Novis' could do was tune it out and try to focus on his duties. To say he was ecstatic when the Keeper handed him a fresh, young dragon to be his apprentice would be an understatement. Finally he would be able to send the young Tomo out on errands for him, make him deliver all the mail and be the in between for Penna's and their own lair, so that he could get on with doing the real work! It didn't matter too much if he wasn't teaching Tomo all the things he should about being a Mage, the less he knew about it, the more willingly he would accept courier duties!
Huzzah!
