The skilled and well-respected assistant Head of Jǫtunheimr Hall, Shai was born to one of the Dark Sclera Clans dotting Sornieth but left at a relatively young age. Gifted in Light magic and with an excellent aptitude for historical study and research, he lived for many years travelling Sornieth, getting by on his wits alone and visiting all the great historical sites he could think of. His knowledge of the history of magic and archaeology is near-encyclopedic, and when he finally decided to come back to Light territory, he bounced around a few teaching jobs at universities before eventually settling down at Home. Now one of the most popular professors at Home, Shai's classes are considered something of a rite of passage - both due to their extreme difficulty and the fact that Shai is arguably one of the most intimidating professors. His reputation as intimidating absolutely befuddles him - sure, he's a little rough around the edges, and he has a gruff and cranky exterior that does indeed tend to scare younger dragons, but Shai and the dragons he's closest to know he wouldn't hurt a fly. Soft-spoken, mild-mannered, and no-nonsense, Shai tends to be terse and a bit brusque. He has little patience for dilly-dallying or horseplay, and has proven a consistent inability to teach younger classes because of how easily he becomes impatient with the foolishness of hatchlings. He deals with hatchlings much better in groups, and both parties fare much better in the elective classes he occasionally gives to small groups of gifted hatchlings. Though younger dragons often find him terrifying, his older students, especially those in his Hall who have gotten to know him better, love him for his deadpan sense of humour and steadfast sense of justice - he's known for strict policies to keep things equitable, having perhaps the lowest tolerance for any bullying or teasing out of all Home's faculty and always willing to accommodate students who need it. He certainly can be a bit brusque, but he also has a level head and calm disposition, as well as a gentle nature and a kind heart, even if he doesn't show it often. Shai is infamous for his difficult classes, and though he values that reputation, he also takes steps to ensure any student can pass his classes if they put forth an effort, and he has policies of being lenient with due dates and extensions. In truth, the difficulty of his courses has much more to do with the difficulty of the material than his teaching style. Possessing Hall pride in spades, Shai is devoted to his students in Jǫtunheimr, and he is determined to push them to truly achieve great things (even when what they'd really rather achieve is an extra hour sleeping in). Used to living a traveler's life, Shai is typically fairly utilitarian, focused on practicality. This is balanced, however, with a love of fancy things and jewelry, giving him a bit of an eccentric style. He believes that being well-traveled is a practical necessity for aspiring historians and magicians, and he puts forth every effort he can to encourage study trips for his students. While he's perhaps the least likely dragon to think of for it, Shai loves baking, and can be be coaxed into teaching baking classes on occasion. His homemade bread and scones are staples at Home's dinner tables.

Behind the Name... Shai (שַׁי) is a Hebrew name. It means 'gift.' |
I am flesh and I am bone Rise up, ting ting, like glitter and gold I've got fire in my soul Rise up, ting ting, like glitter Do you walk in the valley of kings? Do you walk in the shadow of men Who sold their lives to a dream? Do you ponder the manner of things in the dark The dark, the dark, the dark I am flesh and I am bone Arise, ting ting, like glitter and gold I've got fire in my soul Rise up, ting ting, like glitter and gold |
