Chattering Parrot
Cheerful Bird Toy

Even More Beautiful Boulder

Byo is a daring dragon and bold adventurer. When told to fly to the top of a mountain, she'll get up there, decide that was too easy, and launch right past it aiming for the moon. She embraces challenges and would have a staring contest with danger (and would proceed to stare at danger until it blinks and walks away in defeat).

She isn't stupidly brave; her mind is quick and clever. But due to her Spiral ancestry, Byo can be terribly hyperactive and impulsive, always wanting to do something and never settling down to rest or think over things much. She will passionately advocate for what she believes in and not realize that she's annoying someone until they're REALLY annoyed, which can get her into unfortunate situations. Among friends, this is often easily resolved because she'll be genuinely apologetic; luckily for her, she's friends with pretty much everyone.

Above all, her defining quality is positivity. Optimism, naïveté, call it what you like; Byo has it. She always believes in herself and others and never fails to find some sort of silver lining. The Fae simply loves life and treats it like a friend instead of an adversary, and she tries daily to convince other exasperated dragons to do the same.

She embraces the world at its roughest; she's not afraid to get dirty, and she doesn't enjoy being held down by trinkets like jewelry, dresses, or societal expectations. Forget being all serious and dignified! Byo is herself: a cheerful, unsophisticated ball of joy.

If a stranger were to observe Byo for the first time they might think of her as "silly" or "shallow"; maybe they would even think, "This dragon probably contributes absolutely nothing to her clan!" In time, they'll realize just how wrong they are.

Byo does more or less spend all her days socializing, but this is what makes her the face—and more importantly, the beating heart—of Clan Oristos. She's well-acquainted with not only all her clanmates, but also the ever-shifting milieu of dragons who come and go through the Lodgings. It's Byo's familiar presence that makes the newer dragons feel like they are at home; it's Byo who they'll remember years later even if they've moved on.

Because she talks to so many dragons, Byo is a wealth of random facts. She serves as a pollinator of knowledge, spreading unique information and ideas that will (usually) end up somewhere it'll go to good use.

When she's not hanging out with someone, she's probably on a mildly perilous adventure, from which she will return bearing gifts and extraordinarily entertaining stories. In her adolescence, her journeys reached farther from home, but today, she's happy staying relatively close by. There's plenty of novelty and excitement to be found in Dragonhome if you know where to look, and it's dragons, not destinations, that have her heart.

RELATIONSHIPS*********
22140033.png
Firefly
| Best Friend

*********
Byo and Firefly are the quintessential ride-or-die best friends; they complement each other well and bring out the best in each other. Byo contends that Firefly is the sweetest and smartest dragon she knows, and she's instantly willing to advocate for him whenever he's hesitant to do it himself. Though they go on fewer grand adventures now that they're Responsible Adults (blegh), Byo still ropes Firefly into the occasional fun quest.

Glyph
| Friend, Mentor

*********
Though she's not too much younger, Byo has looked up to Glyph her entire life; she thinks Glyph is smart and pretty and SO COOL. Glyph is one of the first dragons Byo thinks to go to when she has a question she can't find the answer to or a hilarious joke she wants to share.
*********
19235485.png
Glorin
| Mother

*********
Byo finds her mother inspiring and strives to be as wise as she is one day, though she doesn't envy the responsibility that comes with it. They get along well and will occasionally take day trips together.
18784536.png
Ripple
| Father

*********
Byo appreciates her father and knows she can always rely on him to provide a good and nonjudgmental ear when she needs it. When she has a problem she can't figure out, she will seek out his advice.

Spurwood
| Friend

*********
Because she comes by the Lodgings more frequently than a typical clan member, Byo has an easy familiarity with Spurwood. They share a mutual respect and comfortable friendship.

To know how Byo came to be, one must go back in time beyond the day her egg was created, beyond the day her biological parents—of a sort—even moved to the clan. It began all the way over at the border between the Windswept Plateau and the Ashfall Waste, where Spirals and Coatls roamed abound.

A clan of Coatls living by the border were attempting to translate a strange, suspicious rune. After much discussion, they decided that this task would be better suited to dragons living in the domain of the Arcanist, for their flight knew magic well. The Starwood Strand was closest to their home and would make for the quickest journey—the problem was, mostly Faes lived there.

Coatls and Faes did not mix; Coatls that only spoke their own native language, even less so. Eventually, they decided that they absolutely must get the rune translated. They sent a single, hot-headed Coatl to do it. This Coatl knew that he would have no hope of communicating with the Faes alone, and so he went to the Windswept Plateau first, enlisting the help of a rather excited Spiral to act as a translator.

They traveled to the Starwood Strand. The first colony they met was, of course, that of many Faes; however, this particular colony comprised of fierce, unfriendly exiles from other dragon clans, and they did not appreciate the two strangers showing up in their midst. The Faes were extremely unenthusiastic about the whole ordeal, much to the dismay of the hyperactive Spiral. They did not bother to help the Coatl understand their droning voices, and ended up stealing the rune through trickery.

The Coatl fumed about their impossible language and thievery. The Spiral was sad that Faes had been so boring. The two came to an agreement: to give them a taste of their own medicine, they would create a Fae that was so boring, so monotonous, so mean that all Faes would see the error of their ways.

Shamed by failing his mission, the Coatl could not return to his clan. He instead traveled to the Shifting Expanse, researching and creating what were fundamentally robotic souls. The Spiral found some dragons—another Spiral and a Coatl—that shared their distaste for Faes and would be willing to help their plan. These two dragons had the robotic souls injected into them. They became absolutely emotionless; they served the will of the mastermind Coatl, who ordered them to inflitrate a clan of Faes and have eggs.

The clan was a small one, home to not just Faes but other breeds, but it was good enough. The leader accepted the four dragons with open wings, and for a while, things were peaceful. The eggs were laid. But when it was time for them to hatch, it seemed that the soul had not been passed on genetically to any of the six children; all the baby Spirals were as happy as any. The Coatl, enraged, tore the robotic souls from the parents and disposed of the entire family.

In a fit of impatience and fury, the Coatl forced his Spiral partner in crime and a Wildclaw to take the robotic souls and lay eggs. The Spiral resisted, having fallen in love with someone else in the clan, but could not escape. They had three eggs.

The three children were born, their wings shiny and metallic as if made from steel, their body marked with circuitlike patterns that could only be the mark of a dark, Lightning-based magic.

And as they poked their heads out for the first time, Spiral regained his senses, fighting the second soul inside him. While the first and second hatchlings were taken by the Coatl to be inspected, he whispered frantically to the third hatchling still making her way out of the egg, telling her not to show emotion, to listen and do exactly what she was ordered to do.

Somehow, it worked. The intelligent little Spiral passed as a robot. Her older siblings were sent away with their mother, while the Coatl called over her partner to celebrate their success. Against his will, knowing he would also be—disposed of—if he didn't comply, the Spiral helped him use a breed change scroll to turn the child into a Fae.

And thus, their plan would be a success.

But it was not quite to be. Midway through the spell, when the child had only the physical appearance of a Fae but not all the psychological traits, they were interrupted.

The clan leader was vigilant. She had been suspicious when half of the clan's newcomers, along with their children, had mysteriously disappeared. She had been watching, along with her clanmates, and she had pieced together what they intended to do.

With her army of a clan behind her, the leader chased away the Coatl, and it was the last any of them would hear of him. The Spiral begged for forgiveness, and his old mate—the one he had fallen in love with—convinced the leader that he could be trusted. (It seemed that things would be okay, for a time, but his story does not end well. This story, however, is not his.)

Upon seeing the small hatchling, the leader—Glorin—was immediately willing to take her in. The Spiral wanted nothing more to do with her, and so Glorin and her mate, Ripple, took the child as their own. She was given a name: Byo.

And that was that. Byo was happy in her youth, surrounded by friends and caring clanmates.

Like any other hatchling born into the clan, she was taught her basics—fishing, insect catching, science, math, reading, writing—by Moonlight. During the early years of her schooling, she looked up to and learned much from Glyph, a smart and gentle older student, from whom Byo gets her cleverness.

Byo found a same-age friend in a shy orphan Fae, Firefly; within their first month in the nursery, the unlikely pair had grown inseparable. Byo's relentlessly energetic personality was tempered by Firefly's softer one, though when Byo went exploring, she would often convince him to go with her, oftentimes getting them both into trouble. They had countless good times together. A boulder by the edge of their territory became their secret hideout; it became witness to their unshakeable friendship from childhood to maturity, as Byo grew a little more thoughtful like Firefly and Firefly grew a little braver like Byo.

Byo and Firefly set off for their Settlement journey—a coming-of-age custom in which they had to choose a place outside of Dragonhome to travel to—at about the same time. While her friend was perfectly happy to stay close, only going to the Starfall Isles for a week or so, Byo decided to go all-out and travel across Sornieth to the Southern Icefields. It was on the way there that she picked up a wild Red-Footed Akirbeak, and both took a liking to the other's fiery temperament. With the bird, she spent a month traveling across the Icefields, befriending even the coldest of Ice dragons, even braving the Fortress of Ends for a week. Perhaps her visit had warmed them up a bit with her cheerful optimism, or perhaps not, but she knew she'd have a home there should she ever wish to return.

Armed with more knowledge of the world's culture, having lived in a life that was not her own, Byo returned to her home—her new Akirbeak friend in tow—exhilarated and refreshed. She settled beautifully into her unofficial role as the clan's representative; she is the one to communicate with newcomers, and she does her job well. Even within her own clan, she can sort out miscommunications (especially between Faes and Coatls, for she mostly understands both languages).
