Gone.

Exalted.

Gone.

To Camael, the words meant one and the same thing. His Mother, His Father, His Father’s ancestors. All but one of his siblings. As soon as the Icewarden took his own children, and eventually his Mate, he fled from his dwelling in Dragonhome. He perhaps knew that fleeing was useless, as nobody can truly outrun the Gods’ will, but in such a state of grief, all rational thought was clouded. He swam for days, pursued by the gaze of purple and green eyes, until exhaustion claimed him.

He washed up upon the shores of the Lightweaver’s Domain, and was attended to by a small group of Dragons who were starting a home of their own. He tried to distance himself from them, but his efforts were in vain when every Dragon went out of their way to include him in their lives. It was admittedly slow going, and not just because of the language barrier. Before he realised it, he had a small armour guard dedicated to him, and even Machlud, who was suspicious at his very core, accepted him.

By far the most welcoming was Heulog, whose kindness and warmth drew him out of his own fears enough that he accepted her shy attempts to court him with an eagerness that surprised even himself. His experiences of being swapped from clan to clan gave him a wealth of information about the way clans in different Flights operated, and how to stay on their positive side if the need ever arose. During the earliest Council Meetings he was more of an advisor, more than anything else, and when it became clear that Heulog was struggling under the stress of being a peacekeeper and ruler, he stepped up alongside her as a support. That he was also her mate merely sweetened the deal.

The first two children grew stronger than he would ever dream them to be. Mabli grew into a fine potential leader, whereas Rhys was a sweet soul, who supported his sister in every way he could.

Until Rhys left without a word to him or Heulog. From what he could glean from Mabli, Rhys had left due to the pressure of rulership. Rumours claimed it was for love, and the sudden disappearance of an alchemist's apprentice did not dampen those rumours. To say Camael was disappointed was an understatement, but ultimately if Rhys' departure made him happy, then Camael could rest easier.

But it was the second hatching of his and Heulog’s eggs that devastated him. He had two more hatchlings, yes, but they had come from a clutch of three eggs. The second egg to hatch revealed another son, whose wings were a deep orange and his hide was a royal blue. Camael barely had the time to consider what to name him when the dreaded glazed look of absence filled his baby’s eyes. He had been claimed by the Lightweaver.

Nobody needed to be fluent in Coatl speech to understand the shriek of despair and fear. Machlud, who was tending to the other nests, came running. Horatio was not far behind him, and they watched in sympathetic horror as the hatchling flew on wobbly wings out of the cave mouth.

Regardless, he moves on. As one must.

The two remaining Hatchlings grew into two wildly different Dragons; Bethany was a soft-hearted, gentle soul (like her older brother), who helped Machlud care for the Nesting Grounds; and Carver was a fierce warrior, who seemed abrasive to all but a select few. Camael wondered wryly where he could have possibly have picked up that trait. What also didn't help was that during the clan's first Night of the Nocturne, Carver was transformed into a Coatl... Much to Camael's mirth.
