As the eldest child of Heulog, it was expected that Mabli would shoulder the burden of leadership when her Mother stepped down. As such, she and her eldest brother Rhys were trained in etiquette and decorum almost as soon as they could walk. Their birth was auspicious, as they were the first Hatchlings to be blessed to the Clan in it's history. Not necessarily the first in the Second Generation of Dragons, but the first to born within the Lair.

The training in etiquette was not Heulog or Camael's idea, but came from the older, wiser Dragons in the lair who understood that diplomacy could not always be handled through others. Heulog was naturally gifted in elegance and eloquence aplenty, though her mate seemed to lack the genteel manners expected of a ruler.

(In hindsight, thinks Mabli, why did they have to follow what was 'expected'? Perhaps it was this training - this pressure - that drove a rift between her and her brother in the first place. If only they had all known, she thinks ruefully.)

Nevertheless, Mabli steps up to the plate gracefully. Heulog was such a beloved figure that Mabli could admit that, in the beginning, she was very apprehensive about trying to fill in those shoes. Thankfully she succeeds, proving a gracious and generous ruler that saw the clan expand and move to a larger home. However, she is perhaps the most oft-forgotten ruler in the history of the clan, despite all she did to secure her family's legacy.

She accepted the hand of a fae named Murk, who was quiet yet deeply intelligent in a way that Mabli respected deeply. It wasn't love, though that wasn't something that her lessons seemed to imply she could expect.

(If only she knew how much Heulog and Camael would never have accepted that - a bond made specifically and solely for a business exchange. Perhaps then she might have changed that practise. Maybe she would have scoffed at the rules back then and found a true Mate. Maybe that would have helped her brother.)

She led a peaceful rule, surrounded by a family that could extend the legacy. Her brother Rhys remained a loyal and calming presence by her side (He was so quiet. She should have known-) She had three Hatchlings survive to see adolescence; two went on to secure her legacy, and the third she suggested that Rhys raise as his own, as he still hadn't expressed an interest in mating anyone she had suggested.

And that's when it went south.

On an unassuming evening, Rhys arrived at her doorstep in tears and confessed - he had a lover.

A male lover.

Someone who he truly believed would be the love of his life.

The pressure to excel as a figurehead was too much, and he needed to leave. He begged her to take back her daughter, afraid that he could not provide a proper life for her when he left the spotlight of the Clan.

Mabli considered it, but then conceded that perhaps there wasn't a better opportunity for Rhys to make his own family elsewhere. And perhaps even raise someone in the family with no expectations of rulership hanging over their head, she pointed out gently.

To say Rhys was grateful would be an understatement. He was gone long before the sun rose, evading even the Guards' watch.

His absence left a void in the clan and in her family, and she answered everyone's probing questions as delicately as she could - He left to start his own path. Without any expectations.

In her more bitter moments, she envies him.

But the clan moved on, as it must. She gained more siblings who shared her dedication to serving their clan, though it was heavily implied that their lines would not inherit. Not that they'd need to, of course, for her son Pel grew stronger and more charismatic by the day. (Oh, if only she knew.)
