As the youngest in Camael and Heulog's brood, the expectations resting on Bethany's shoulders were a lot lighter than those for her siblings. By the time she and Carver were born, their older sister Mabli's own children were nearly matured, so the legacy of their family was already assured.

The expectations of greatness that she faced, however, started the moment she froze herself to her nest in her sleep.

She was lucky to have been born in a clan that was already familiar with the quirks of magic, for goodness knows how they would have reacted otherwise! She was tested the next morning for other magic abilities by Floyd, and they came to the conclusion that she had an arcane spark fairly quickly.

As the first of the Royals to have any magical skill, many assumed that perhaps she would step up to meet Floyd's station as a Grand Enchanter. Unfortunately however, her skills were only average at best. She loved the process of magic; loved having the electric feeling beneath her scales, the awareness of space beyond her person... But other than her first subconscious display of power, she couldn't summon power that great again.

Although she was dismayed at her lack of prowess, her studies in the Academy led her to Azurite. Azurite was a strange Dragon - she had unusual horns, unusual habits, and a peculiar voice that almost sounded like many people speaking at once. Bethany took a shine to her; naturally a little intrigued, yes, but also she liked the way Azurite would articulate her complex thoughts, her grace... Her beauty.

She was not like her oldest brother. She knew realistically speaking that as the youngest she could act however she pleased, as long as it wasn't to the detriment of the clan. Her own insecurities didn't extend to this; her magical ability, or lack thereof, was enough for her to worry about.

She asked Azurite out of the blue - in the middle of a shared study session - if she would like to try a courtship. Azurite was surprised, but pleasantly so, and accepted her suit. It was months into their courtship - close to when an official Mateship is usually proposed - that Azurite finally revealed her charge to Bethany.

Her Star was difficult for Bethany to comprehend, so to hear that it was both a connection point and sustainer for Azurite and her family was... Well, intriguing, to put it lightly. Azurite explained gently that it was both a part of her, and something she was duty-bound to protect.

For Azurite to show this to Bethany was not conventional for her family at all, but Azurite explained that she trusted Bethany, and loved her with all of her heart. To her, this was the most important way that she could show Bethany all of this, and proposed right then and there.

They became Mates not long after that. When Pel ascended to the throne, they decided to adopt a child and raise them to be a part of Pel's court. They soon adopted a small, blue Nocturne who they named Griffon.

As Bethany is a Guardian, she was born with an... Urge to find something, and protect it. It didn't make itself obvious to her for the longest time, as she usually brushed it off to her magic. She was aware that she had a Charge, as her mum explained it, but she was just too busy to really pay attention to that sort of thing.

That lasted until the itch settled, when she stepped into the Nesting Grounds to visit Carver's new hatchlings. She'd barely crossed the threshold when she begged Machlud for a position as a Nest-Tender.

Machlud and his son Mefus were amused, and offered her a role effective immediately.
