______ Auxentius never was a pious man. Sure, he acknowledged his deity on her holiday just like every other dragon on Sornieth, but true worship rarely comes easily to an orphan. What god would allow his parents to leave him and his sister to die for a reason they would never know? What god would allow that same sister to fall prey to hostile Serthis in the Tangled Wood? What god would leave him alone? No, Auxentius has never been a pious man. But he has never hated the gods or other dragons. He has been gentle, a soft presence, listening and healing. So when he collapsed weary at Aralucien's feet, he fell right into place among a clan built on recovery.

______ The dragons of Caladrius rarely hear Auxentius speak, aside from his strictly-business conversations with his superiors. Perhaps this is what drew him to the only dragon in the clan more silent than him–Hastur. Caladrius saw them as an unlikely pair, the sinister with the sweet. But Auxentius saw through the Pearlcatcher's unwelcoming exterior, and they learned how to help each other. Now Hastur speaks of vengeance against the gods who wronged them both, and the shifting landscape and talk of Emperors and the end of the gods' silence has only made him more anxious. Auxentius can only hope that whatever comes next will not spell the end of the clan of vagabonds.
