Biography
Honestly, she just showed up one day, wearied from travel, and nobody asked any questions. Not that she would answer them if they had; she wasn’t one for lengthy conversations. In fact, most of the others could could on one paw the number of words she had said. When she arrived, her silence took them, a naturally boisterous clan, by surprise. They were so taken aback by her quiet nature, and her voice was so dwarfed by the uproarious laughter that always filled their dwelling that nobody could actually understand her introduction, so they all just called her Mustard. That was, in fact, not her name, but she never once corrected them.
It felt like she had been there all along, which she may as well have been. The clan knew Mustard well (…well, they knew her as well as anyone knew Mustard, which is to say not very well at all), and Mustard knew each of them by name. They confided in her, comforted by her steadfast silence. If you caught her on the right night, just as the stars overhead darted between the clouds, she would share whispered tales of adventure and danger as she gazed beyond the ridges in the distance. She spoke of her travels fondly, for the most part, but her tales were hard to hear. Her words held a bite of loneliness beneath their warm reminiscence. As she spoke of places far beyond their clan, places she had once known as her home, and places she had left behind, those listening would feel themselves drowning beneath the weight of her words.
Would she one day leave them, too?
