Hyphae is fortunate in many ways. Despite being the daughter of a dragon afflicted with the dreaded Rot, she somehow managed to avoid contracting the illness upon her hatching. This has spared her a life of ache and woe, as well as the parasite problems that come with the territory, but she is unfortunately quite cursed with dry and brittle scales. Such an ailment would be the bane of lesser dragons--the itching, the shedding, the cracking and flaking--but it is an unexpected boon to a Plague beast who finds herself at the right place at the right time.

Having grown up in a rather humid environment, in the spongy and fleshy lands surrounding the Wyrmwound, her body has become a thriving ecosystem. All manner of mold and fungi cling to her, growing and spreading across his body like a glorious parasitic garden. It’s a curse in the eyes of outsiders, but Hyphae has managed to make things work despite the discomfort it causes her. She’s learned very quickly that she is an apothecary’s best friend out in the field, as well as the fact that the particular strains and species that flourish on her are exceedingly rare and valuable.

And nobody, nobody pays better than a curious or desperate potionmaker.

Though quite the cash cow and happy to reap the benefits of her misfortune, she suffers the consequences daily: the molds and mushrooms are terribly, terribly itchy but the act of scratching or wallowing only serves to destroy her main means of income. As a result, she’s quite the twitchy dragon, often found fidgeting and jerking and struggling to fight the urge to scratch. This, alongside the irritability born from such discomfort, can prove to make her more enemies than friends, and it is exceedingly rare that she forms bonds with the dragons around her. She’s far more likely to curse and snap than offer a hello, and suggestions she “cure” herself are met with firm, hostile resistance.

After all, asking her to give up her “illness” is like asking a blacksmith to give up their anvil. Some dragons sew, some dragons hunt, some dragons deliver messages between fields of battle for a few gold coins here and there. And some dragon--one dragon--just has to avoid scratching herself for pouches full of gems, a simple job that puts meat on the table and clothes on her back, and she’ll be damned if she’ll give it up because somebody thinks she’s “temperamental” and “gross.”
