Theme Song: Starchild

FallenStar came from a clan in the Starfall Isle’s called “The Chessboard Keep” where the politics therein of the clan were strange, revolving around the moving of pieces not unlike a chessboard, and where each dragon represented a different piece. Her mother and father, like most in that clan, both have unearthly powers rarely seen outside fairytales. Blood In The Tainted Stream, or TaintedStream as is her nickname, is Fallen Star’s mother who was so named for her powers over the dead and her knowledge of the darker magics in the world. A powerful dark magician, her mother is one of the stronger pieces on her clan’s chessboard and although she began life as a shy and meek hatchling, TaintedStream has grown in strength and presence in the world. Nightsky, FallenStar’s father, was one of the dragons who helped her mother develop into the powerful dragon she is today. Her father was a beautiful fire dancing Wildclaw who came from a family of spirit diviners. He too, could manipulate fire and speak to spirits like his ancestors. He met TaintedStream and together they grew in their knowledge of the dead and in their love for each other. Everything was well until Nightsky was doomed to die seen in a vision by his family and die he did.

FallenStar’s father was brutally murdered by an infamous psychopath known to the world as “The Pink Snake” or as Nightsky learned on the day of his death, Sin. Her father is now a spirit, bound forever to the land of Sornieth and unable to move on. Sometimes, when he has enough energy, he can form a physical body and speak to the living. He continues to exist in this not-living but also not-dead limbo as he searches for the vengeance he craves.

This was the family in which FallenStar was born into; a baby Pearlcatcher surrounded by death on all sides under the dominion of the enigmatic, and sometimes violent, rulers that governed her birthclan like a game of chess. As a child, she would often see her mother performing dark magic for practice or to help her mate retain a physical form. During these times there were the brief moments in which she would be able to see her father. He often flickered in and out of existence when her mother was around but rarely did he interact with FallenStar in these moments. His expressions were always calm, almost bored…. almost as if his emotions were hidden behind a veil. Perhaps her other siblings spoke to him more and knew him better, like Bloodsfire, her much older brother. Unlike Fallenstar, he also had the power to help their father gain physical form and knew much about the spirit world himself.

As a hatchling, FallenStar demonstrated none of her family’s unusual gifts over spirits or necromancy and this often isolated her from the commonly occurring mysteries that plagued her parents. They cared for her and she felt loved, at least by her mother, but she was often shunted aside for her own safety. She was not important like her mother or unique like her bother, or beautiful and distant like her father. FallenStar was simply a plain, ungifted young dragon in a clan were everyone had unusual abilities. Due to this, she would often wander off alone away from the clan for long periods of time. Nobody ever came to find her; whether they were secretly glad she was out of their way or they just never noticed her absence, she never discovered. In her mind, this was what happened to those hatchlings who did not fit in. She would often climb to the highest crystal peak nearby and stare up at the stars; wondering when the clan would decide it was time for her to leave for good. Many of her siblings that did not stay with the clan often left to serve the Arcanist. FallenStar believed that this would eventually be her fate too.

She would often gaze down at her paws in disgust at their plainness. Why was she so plain? Why couldn’t she be a ghost like her father or a necromancer like her mother? Even Bloodsfire was possessed by a supernatural spirit that lived together with him! She was nothing compared to them… She was ordinary. She didn’t belong.

Or that’s what she believed before she was struck by the asteroid.

FallenStar had always loved the night sky. Maybe it made her feel closer to her father or maybe it was just the arcane dragon in her. Whatever the case, it was the burning luminosity of those faraway worlds that gave her comfort when her loneliness was especially painful. During one of her nighttime trysts, she saw the most amazing meteor shower she’d ever seen. Asteroids of all different colors plummeted from the heavens and her eyes widened in awe as she perched on one of her familiar crystal peaks. The falling stars rushed over her head so close she could almost feel the heat coming from their fiery tails. She laughed in delight and hastily began to sketch the scene playing out around her. As her quill feverishly raced across the parchment of her note pad, one of the largest meteors arched straight for her peak.

Even had she been paying attention in that moment, FallenStar would likely still not have been able to dodge the fiery ball of death hurling itself directly at her. As it happened however, she had the briefest realization that her life was about to end and a fleeting thought that perhaps it was better that it ends this way. What use had she been in her short life? Before the end came, she glanced up at the night sky once more and wish it goodbye.

She expected pain and fire. Sensations of writhing and the crushing of molten rock against her scales. Maybe she did feel these things but in the exact moment that the comet collided with her, her eyes perceived a glowing figure with multiple wings and piercing arcane eyes that, in their depths, hid all the secrets of magic and the stars. Her very soul seemed to fall into those eyes and light erupted around her in all different hues. Familiar and unfamiliar colors danced around and through her. Something like the shattering of glass assaulted her ears during this onslaught of sensations. She could not tell if this was her own screaming or the breaking of some barrier within her. Was this what happened when you died, she wondered hazily, was this was her father had been through? Before she got the answers to these questions however, FallenStar’s world suddenly fell into darkness.

When she awoke, the world was completely different. The colors she remembered from before still swirled in the air around her like breaths of wind. She blinked a few times and realized the rest of her body was intact. She ached all over but she was definitely whole and alive. Slowly she turned her head to glance around. She was laying on her back with her wings splayed out across her peak. Chunks of glittering, blue-green iridescent rock scattered the ground around her; remnants of the asteroid that had struck her.

FallenStar grunted as she got to her knees and placed a paw to her throbbing head. The swirling colors around her didn’t help her disorientation but glancing down at her body to check if she was wounded, she shrieked. There were dark runes tattooed in glittering patterns down her back. The ink used appeared to be made of the night sky. She nearly fainted when she glanced at her wings next. Those strange colors floated around them like drifted auras but the most surprising thing was that the night sky had invaded her wings. Literally, the stars danced in the glittering webs of her wings like a portal had made residence on them.

Later she would realize just how much of her had been changed. She gained a new kind of vision where she not only saw the living world but also now saw a form of the spirit world in the forms of colors and auras. It was not exactly like her bother, who had the power to venture into the spirit world physically, it was that her new vision allowed her to see the spirit world overlaid with the living world. She also could see further into the sky than any dragon she had ever met and now knew things about the universe that she never remembered learning. FallenStar, so named from this incident, had transformed into a strange being who could walk among stars and speak to spirits.

Perhaps her gifts had been with her the whole time but just needed something to shatter the barrier between her ordinary exterior and extraordinary mind and soul.

1st Meeting with Sin in the Undergrounds of Twisting Lights

FallenStar gazed down at the filth in his cage of stone and frowned deeply, "Why did you do it?"

Sin, after a moment of silence, twisted his long scaly head around so he could peer through the small space between the bars of his prison. Out of the corner of his good eye he was aware of Coryza in standing in the shadows watching them balefully; ever the unhappy warden. His lips twitched in amusement. Then his single eye lifted to the pearlcatcher and arched his eyebrow innocently, "Did what? Kill your cat?"

"My father... why did you kill him?" FallenStar growled the words softly under her breath.

Sin sat back and pretended to sigh heavily, "Girly do you know how many fathersss I've killed in my day?" He didn't sound remotely sorry; in fact he almost sounded boastful.

The pearlcatcher stiffened and her voice was suddenly tense, "Nightsky. His name is... was Nightsky."

This caught Sin's attention and his ears perked up as did his lips and his smile grew menacing, "You're the child of that deliciousss ssspector?"

"DON'T mock him!" FallenStar shouted suddenly.

Sin's grin grew wider, "Why do you defend him? You don't know him. Not really... do you?" His head cocked to the side and his voice turned playful, "Even as a ghossst he'sss never come to you hasss he? You only know him in passing."

FallenStar bit back the resentment flooding the back of her throat and looked away. The snake was right of course. She didn't really know her father, not like her mother and brother did. Not like this... killer seemed to. Nightsky had never really met her at all. She wasn't even sure if he knew about the asteroid incident; although surely her mother would have mentioned it...

"Why did you come here?" Sin asked suddenly, leering through the bars, and her muscles tensed again. He chuckled cruelly, "Were you looking for remorssse? Or maybe jusst ssomeone to talk too about your long lossst, deadbeat daddy?"

FallenStar screeched at him and then threw a rock by her paw at the side of the wall and swished her tail in fury. She should not have come down here! She didn't understand why she had in the first place. This snake held no answers for her; only poison and resentment. She turned to leave when she heard Sin say, "Tell him I sssay 'hello darling' the next time you go looking for him, won't you my sssweet Ssstarchild?"

Starchild was one of the nicknames her friend Leto had given her. The name had caught on since her arrival in Twisting Lights and FallenStar had gotten into the habit of answering to it as well as her true name. Ironically enough, Leto happened to be this snake's grandchild but she couldn't be more different. She was fair and soft spoken, wise beyond her young years, and completely blind. The nickname always sounded like an endearment when it came from Leto's lips but from Sin's it sounded mocking and foreboding.

FallenStar's jaws clenched tight before she rushed off down the caves towards the barrows that would lead out of the Underground. Sin's appointed warden, Coryza, watched her go with a flicker of worry in her normally unflinching expression.

2nd Meeting with Sin

Sin was leaning against the wall of his small cavern cell, a bored expression dominating his long face as he played with a tiny ball of plague magic. The pulsing red orb bounced from talon to talon as he wiggled his fingers and manipulated the elemental energy inside him. Although he appeared uninterested in his little game, his single crimson eye kept glancing periodically towards the large iron bars that blocked the only exit in this cave in the depths the Undergrounds that he was locked in. In the craggy tunnel, dimly lit by several oil lanterns affixed to the walls, beyond the bars of his cage stood Coyrza sulking in the shadows watching him with her typical menacing expression. Sin grinned tauntingly while staring right at her and added magic to his tiny plague ball so that suddenly grew twice as large.

Coryza’s answering warning growl was all it took for Sin to start chuckling darkly, “Ssso sssorry, warden.” He snapped his claws together and the plague ball vanished as if it had never been. Coryza grunted and turned away from his cell. He continued to chuckle at his little game when one of his ears twitched at the noise of another dragon venturing into tunnel.

Fallen Star stepped through the passage and locked eyes with the large plague guardian who looked down at her as she entered. Coryza said nothing but nodded slightly to her which meant Fallen Star could approach the prisoner’s cell bars.

“Is that you, ssspirit girly?” Sin’s voice floated above the silence of the caverns.

Fallen Star closed her eyes for a moment before stepping up to the iron bars and staring into the cell at the pink Spiral within. She did not speak.

He slithered to the center of his cage and smiled softly, “I knew you’d be back.”

“Tell me what happened when you…when my father died,” Her words were even and her expression was unreadable but Sin’s smile widened his head tilted slightly to the right.

“You mean after I ssslit his throat?”

Fallen Star’s expression didn’t waver but one of her claws twitched. She waited for him to continue.

The snake pondered her for a moment before speaking again, “Other ssspirits came.”

Her eyes widened and betrayed a sudden burning fire behind them before she could school her emotions into blankness.

Sin tilted his head further to look at her profile, “Do you ever think about it?”

Fallen Star looked at him bemused by his question, “What?”

“What that ghost is sstill doing here? What he felt at the moment of hiss death?” He taunted her by sliding closer to the bars and peering at her with his good eye, “What will happen if you cannot…”

She was staring at his words with a look of dawning horror but Sin’s voice trailed off and she stepped back, “N-no…that’s not.” She glared at the floor suddenly, obviously upset, “I’m going.”

Sin slid back from the bars and watched her depart from tunnel and smiled darkly.
