It wouldn't be too far of a stretch to describe Kra's personality to be akin to that of a boulder. He's unyielding, rarely expressive, and incredibly reserved. He's not too bothered with the need to make friends or spare feelings and he's often too impatient for the tediousness of common social norms. In fact, he much prefers to communicate with grunts and nods of his head if it's enough to get his point across. He refuses small talk and prefers to get right to the point. The one emotion he shows with any frequency is irritation. That said, in his eyes, Aelriana can do no wrong. He lives to serve her and only her and he constantly finds himself worrying about how she feels or if she's safe. She, unlike any other dragon, brings out the best of him. He feels perfectly comfortable having drawn out conversation with her so long as nobody else decides to butt in. He's a fierce fighter and isn't afraid of dirty tactics if they're able to give him the advantage. The only thing that matters is that he lives another day so he can make sure Aelriana lives one, too.

Background

All for the clan. Fight for the clan. Die for the clan, Kra repeated the words in his mind. The Guardian hatchling stood at attention alongside a group of about fifteen other Guardian children. In front of them was the looming figure of Arzolt, who Kra couldn't help but stare up at with deep admiration. The adult dragon's body was littered in battle scars, tattered wings, and chipped scales. They were trophies of battle; nothing was more honorable to the Griphook Guardian clan than battle. When Arzolt's eyes met Kra's own, the hatchling quickly focused his face into the most serious he could muster. Today was the day he would finally be able to show his strength.

"You lot," Arzolt roared and glared toward the group of hatchlings, "are going to show the might of the Griphook today!" He stomped one foot and spread his wings in an intimidating show of their full span. "You must hunt," he bared his teeth, "and show feeble creatures what it means to be lesser than a Guardian. Bring me your largest prey at sundown today!" One mighty roar ended his words and he tilted his head and looked toward the hatchlings expectantly.

Kra felt adrenaline start rushing through him. He along with the other hatchlings roared. "All for the clan!" they chanted, "Fight for the clan! Die for the clan!" These words were what Arzolt had been waiting to hear. He gave one satisfied nod and dismissed the hatchlings to the task he had assigned. Excited hatchlings dispersed into the woods until all that remained were Kra and the only one of his fellow hatchlings he couldn't stand. Her name was Aelriana and she was garishly colored and had an aptitude for ignoring everything the elders taught. It was no wonder she didn't have any friends. Kra scoffed, glared toward her, and made his way into the forest.

He spent most of his day tracking small animals and making quick work of them. He had finally tracked a herd of deer and was poised to pick off one of the doe that was far enough back from the rest of the herd. However, before he could strike, the crack of a tree branch nearby spooked the beast and soon the entire herd was madly dashing away. It wasn't worth the effort to chase. Anger seethed through Kra as he turned to kill whatever had caused the mishap. He locked eyes with Aelriana, who was wide-eyed and watching the deer disappear.

"I had that!" He growled, "how are you so moronic all the time!? Do you not know even the most basic steps of a hunt?"

An emotion Kra couldn't quite place flashed across Aelriana's face. She opened her mouth as if to speak, then closed it again. There was silence for a moment. "Y'know," she said, turning away from Kra, "I realize I don't need to justify a response to that." She started to walk away without another word. Kra felt a bit of guilt creep into his head. He took a deep breath and exhaled a long sigh. Then, he ran to catch up to the other Guardian. He fell into step beside her and she acted as if he didn't exist.

"Where's your kill?" Kra asked. Aelriana paused, looked toward the various carcasses that were strapped to Kra's back, and shrugged.

"Looks like you've hunted more than enough for the both of us." As she spoke, Kra noticed slight movement in the nook between Aelriana's horns. There sat a glowing mouse that was very much alive.

"You do know you're supposed to... hunt them, right?"

"Is a mouse all that impressive anyway?"

"Hm," Kra responded. Bringing back a mouse was just asking for mockery. Though, bringing back nothing would be worse. "Well I'm not sharing any of mine."

"I didn't ask you to."

The two continued walking until they reached the edge of the clan's camp. Aelriana stopped to let the mouse down and it ran into a small hole within the roots of a tree. They joined the group that had also returned from their task. Kra excitedly showed off his own prey and admired the kills of others. Soon, the group noticed Aelriana was empty handed and it wasn't long until they began mocking her lack of skill. Arzolt watched with indifference. Kra, who would have normally joined in with an exaggerated retelling of how she had ruined his chances with the deer, remained silent. He thought of the mouse and the dumb smile Aelriana had on her face when she had let it go. This was my hunt! Why am I thinking about her?

Kra sunk his teeth into hide of his writhing foe until the loud cry of "mercy!" signified him to let go. He did so, and the dragon he had been fighting backed away from him and spat out a mouthful of blood. When the Griphook Guardians finally reached their adult age, it was tradition to fight each same-aged dragon until a hierarchy was established. These fights also acted as the catalyst for true Guardianship. All Griphooks eventually recognize the clan as their Charge. It was only natural. All for the clan. Fight for the clan. Die for the clan. He'd repeated those words many times. Yet, they were always only words. Another fight won and the clan was still just the clan.

His mind wandered to the Guardian that sat on the sidelines that hadn't lifted a claw in any effort to fight. It was Aelriana, of course. The problem child. If it weren't for her magical abilities, she'd have been driven to exile long before now. Kra couldn't dwell on his thoughts for too long. After all, he had another fight to win. He turned to face his next opponent but his heart suddenly began beating violently in his chest as an impending sense of danger flooded through every part of his being. His eyes snapped back toward Aelriana and the dragon that was suddenly lunging toward her throat.

With a deafening screech he leaped to meet the would-be attacker and collided with them before they reached Aelriana. He bit, slashed, and drove his horns into his opponent with ferocity that scared even himself. His mind echoed with new words. All for her. Fight for her. Die for her. This is what it meant to have meaning. To need to protect something and kill for a reason. Other dragons tried to stop his attacks but it wasn't until Arzolt wrestled him off that he finally snapped to his senses.

To recognize one's Charge as anything other than the clan was a sin punishable with death or exile. Kra twisted himself from Arzolt's grip and stood between Aelriana and the rest of the gathered dragons. There was no doubt that they knew what had just taken place. Kra was now bonded to Aelriana and she was not yet bonded to anything.

"We need to go," Kra growled. "Or we both die here." Aelriana snapped out of her shock and without a word dashed away and into flight. Kra glared toward the crowd and made sure nobody had made any move to follow before he, too, sprinted away and flew in formation behind her. Neither looked back. Neither were followed.

Notes and Fun Facts

  • My random progen. He ended up having colors I liked more than my custom progen, haha. Even if the Forest tert is somewhat unfortunate.
  • He has a one-sided rivalry going on with Aelriana's Ember Mouse. Everything the rodent does annoys Kra to no end but the mouse seems entirely oblivious to the whole thing.
  • Arzolt is featured in Kra's backstory section but isn't actually a dragon I've ever owned. I did scry an image for him, though, here.
