Personality
Lawful Good
Discipline
Aelriana lives by the notion that all creatures are entitled to a full life and that all should be treated with the respect she wants to receive in turn. She's fair, level-headed, and tends to lean toward a kindhearted nature. She struggles with expressing these emotional ideals, however, and her socially awkward side usually shines through in a way that makes others assume she's aloof and distant. She's an avid collector of bones and can spend weeks rearranging her displays, polishing each piece, and scavenging for more (or harassing the Adventurers' Guild about creating more bone-themed fetch quests). Her bond with the strange dimension that Riftwist Town resides in fuels her curiosity toward its very nature. What created it and for what purpose? Most of all, why is she the only one who's capable of charging the crystals that act as its energy source?

Background
Aelriana tapped the tips of her two front claws together nervously as she stood outside the shabby wooden door of the inn she and Kra were currently staying in. Tap tap, two more clicks of the claws before she gently knocked on the door then slowly pulled it open with a nervous smile on her face.

The Guardian in the room jumped to his feet, "Barging in here-- who are you!?" He growled, then just as suddenly as he stood, he locked eyes with Aelriana and froze, said eyes widening. "Aely? Wh-what happened? You're, ehm, not... you?"

His words were true. When she had left the inn that morning she was a Guardian just like Kra was. When she returned, she was a Skydancer with no common traits to her previous self other than her vivid eyes. Aelriana stepped into the room and pushed the door closed with her tail as she strode forward. Despite Kra's ferocious reaction to the sudden intrusion she knew his instincts would not allow him to hurt her. She was his Charge, after all. She sighed and leaned into Kra's shoulder surprised by just how cozy that spot was now that she was smaller in stature. An Ember Mouse darted out from under the bed and scurried itself up into her hands. She pat its head and felt her nerves calm down. "I read the book."

"You what? You knew that thing was cursed!"

"I couldn't stay so helpless forever. After those bandits and you getting hurt, well, I know it was stupid but it helped my magic before. I thought just a little more wouldn't hurt but, well," she gestured to herself, "it decided I didn't look the part."

"It what?" Kra sputtered while his glare studied every inch of his now Skydancer companion. "Where is that thing!? I swear I'll tear it--"

"You say that every time," Aelriana interrupted with a giggle, though her smile fell quickly when she saw how serious Kra's gaze was. She lowered the mouse she had been petting down to the floor and it scurried back under the bed. "It's gone now. I got to the last page and felt this... I can't describe it. Like time and space were pushing their way into my head and I finally understand why it was all written like that. And- and," all of it was still fresh in her mind and just thinking of it sent a sharp pain through her skull. "I understand why I was so hellbent on protecting it." The book had been her Charge. "If only I'd have known that the megalomaniac who wrote it would make it turn its next reader into the spitting image of themself."

There was uncomfortable silence then a deep sigh from Kra as he finally relaxed. The two dragons leaned against one another and let each other's company ease the weight of their current situation. Aelriana knew that Kra would insist on finding a way to fix things. She also knew that there was no solution. The book had fundamentally changed her own mana and fate in a way that altering them any further would cause more than lethal consequences. But, despite everything, she was still his Charge. And there was nothing more comforting than that.

Months after the magical mishap, Aelriana was finally starting to get used to her new size and stature. Whether it was due to her more sinister appearance or the fact that her clothing was covered in an assortment of bones and skulls, the crowd in the market square was giving her a wide berth. That was, all but one Fae adorned in gaudy armor and ribbon. The tiny dragon was staring intently toward Aelriana in between staring equally as intently at a copper compass. She looked from the compass to Aelriana, gave the compass a quick shake, then looked back up with a satisfied expression.

"I finally found you!" she called out and briskly walked toward Aelriana, who proceeded to glance around to see who the Fae was actually talking to. "You," the Fae said, pointing directly at her. Confusion washed over the Skydancer and she crouched to meet the stranger's height.

"What can I possibly help you with?" Aelriana asked, feeling a bit thankful that Kra wasn't around to overreact to the situation she found herself in. "I'm sorry but I don't know you and I didn't mean to do anything to offend."

"Offend? No!" the Fae chimed, "and my name is Falter so now you know me. You need to come with me." She held up her compass so that the display was clear to Aelriana. The arrow of the compass was not pointing north, rather, it pointed at her. The Skydancer shifted and the arrow followed. She walked a circle entirely around the Fae and the arrow stayed true. There was no doubt that she was the focal point.

"Erm, I think your compass is broken," Aelriana said.

"Are you not a mage?" Falter asked.

"Kind of?" She still wasn't sure exactly what she was at this point.

"Well that's reassuring," Falter clicked the lid of the compass closed. "Nevertheless, you need to come with me. Triple whatever price your service is and that's what I'm paying. It's an extremely urgent job and if we stand around any longer then I fear lives will be destroyed before we can fix things."

"I think there's some kind of mist--" Aelriana was trying to get a word in when a gruff voice cut her off.

"We charge three million treasure," Kra spoke, having caught the tail end of their conversation, "you'll be paying nine." That was more money that Aelriana could even comprehend let alone more than she'd ever worked for. However, Falter didn't seem fazed by the money nor the Guardian whose presence now cast a shadow over where she stood.

The small party trekked on a week's journey into the winding volcanoes of the Ashfall Waste until they finally found themselves at a portal. The portal itself was tinged in blackness and pulsating with unstable energy. Within it was the sight of an empty town backlit by a blackened sky. Whatever this place was, darkness was consuming it. Falter had explained the circumstances during their travels, but seeing it in person sent chills down Aelrina's spine. She gripped her staff with nervous resolve as she stepped through the dimensional rift. Kra moved to follow but Falter flew up to block his way. The two exchanged fierce expressions and the Guardian backed down.

This portal led to the town of Riftwist. Just as Falter had described, the mana crystals that kept the void from consuming the dimension were dying and very soon everything that was built there would be nothing but emptiness. Homes, shops, and livelihoods are gone as if they had never existed at all. The citizens had already evacuated. Aelriana made her way through the vacant streets and up the spire where the first crystal was housed. Her heart was beating heavily in her chest and her mind was reeling with all the ways this was likely to go wrong. She thought of how she wasn't a real mage and that this helpless gesture wouldn't be enough to save the town from certain doom. How it should have been anyone else standing where she was now. But Kra and Falter believed in her and she had to try. It was too late for it to be anyone else.

She touched her staff to the center of the crystal and energy began to crackle around it. Then, a rush of dizziness shot through Aelriana's body as the crystal began to glow with a blinding energy. It now radiated a comfortable heat and the light dimmed into a soft glow. She looked toward the awakened crystal with the sense that its fate and hers were tied by more than just a compass and a cursed book. She stepped back and took a few deep breaths until her heartbeat slowed to its usual pace. Then, she turned and started on the path to the next dying crystal.

Notes and Fun Facts
  • My custom progen who isn't very custom anymore, haha. Scattered on 8/28/2016; re-geneing finished on 9/7/2016 #NoRagrets
  • Patchi the Ember Mouse was my first familiar in Flight Rising and because of that, it's always the familiar on Aelriana's page. The two have been friends since childhood and it's very likely that there's some magic afoot that has extended the mouse's lifespan.
  • She has trouble understanding why others are so terrified of her and is blissfully unaware of her edgelord aesthetic and the fact that people might be weary of one of the most powerful authorities in town.
  • Her election to the mayoral position is always unopposed. I cannot confirm nor deny that political pressure courtesy of Falter makes this a constant thing.
