Biography
Chosen "That one." Aries gestured to the great guardian standing on the auction block. The deep obsidian of his belly and horns glistened in the sunlight. Rich trails of rust like poison traced it's way across his body. He was a spectacle to say the least. it wasn't that he stood out to the matriarch, she was watching the crowd's response to him. It was obvious that he was garnering attention. Falkor nodded his head in understanding and Aries left him to collect their purchase. A Place in the Glass Shatter Ripto was grateful to be given a home within the Glass Shatter clan. He wanted nothing more than to earn his keep and gain the trust of the emotionally detached matriarch, Aries. So when he was told his purpose, to become the mate of a skydancer in the clan, Ripto accepted his role with gratitude. Schatten was a beautiful dragon, with silk feathers the color of the the darkest night. She had had many mates before him before she came to this clan and she deserved his utmost loyalty. He respected her for everything she had been through and everything she was. When their first clutch was born one of the hatchlings had what can only be described as a birth defect. Schatten was mortified and blamed herself. Ripto did everything he could to console her, but Schatten spiraled into a deep depression. Ripto tried to explain that the birth defect could have come from him, or something in the environment. Hadn't she heard the rumors of Moonshine and his offspring? But the beautiful skydancer mourned for damage she felt she had inflicted on her son, Nerve. She never let her child see her dismay, but when she was alone with Ripto she would release her bottled up emotions in a stream of tears. He always had the strongest shoulder to cry on. The other two hatchlings from their clutch went on their own paths. One moved on to a new clan and the other went on to serve Shadowbinder. Schatten insisted that Nerve was to stay in the Shatter Glass clan where she could keep him safe. You see, his birth defect left him vulnerable. Despite the large, powerful guardian he had become, like his father, his skin was his Achilles heel. What looked like coral poison on the surface was actually the raw veins, muscle and sinew beneath translucent skin. The dark crackle that encased him acted as a shield, but the skin that was left exposed was fragile and thin. He could never join his peers in the coliseum. One blow in the right area could surely open up a vein that would end his life. Though Schatten would spend her days wallowing in guilt, Ripto cared for her. He did everything in his power to make life easier on her and raise their son to understand his limitations and work with his strengths. He was a noble father and mate. Schatten was finally beginning to realize that it wasn't their fault that this had happened to their beloved son and that everything was going to be okay. That is, until Pitch joined the clan. Pitch had wandered into the Glass Shatter clan and quickly gained the approval of Aries. No one knew where she came from, or why she was alone, because she simply didn't speak. She was a mute, but it was a mystery as to why. Some dragons speculated that she was born this way and others thought that her silence was a choice. Regardless of why or how she came to be, Ripto found himself mesmerized by the dark and glistening guardian. She was so unique and intriguing, he couldn't help himself. He would never betray Schatten, but he found himself thinking about Pitch whenever she was out of sight. Actually, he found himself only thinking of her. She seemed so indifferent to every dragon that he couldn't even tell how she felt about him. Her silence was maddening. Aries set about quickly looking for a mate for Pitch. Her beauty was not to be wasted. She would surely produce babies that could be sold at great profits for the clan. Every time she left the lair in search of the perfect mate for her newest member, Ripto's heart would sink. Aries, ever the observant one, would see the involuntary flicker of hope flash in his eyes when she returned empty handed. The strife that she could inflict upon her clan was simply too enticing for Aries's sadistic side to pass up. The Arrival of a New Guardian As the leader of the clan she demanded that Ripto become Pitch's new mate. Their genetics were the perfect match and she would allow no other mate for Pitch. Schatten froze in disbelief. Aries watched the sickening realization wash across the skydancer's face as her world came crashing down on her again. She had barely just recovered from the heavy guilt that she carried from her son's affliction, and now this was happening. Aries relished the thought of the turmoil that must have been going on in the skydancer's mind in that moment. Ripto, eternally obedient to his clan, accepted his new position with a heavy heart. Yes, he had fallen for Pitch and was thrilled to be with her, but his heart broke for the pain he knew this was causing Schatten. He loved her, too, and it pained him to see her hurting. He wanted to console her, to let her lean on his chest and listen to his heart beat until her own breathing steadied, just as he had when she would begin to panic about their son. But, he couldn't. He was no longer hers and he was the one causing the pain. He would have to let her pick up the pieces of her life on her own. Schatten tried to move on. Over time, she sought out a new mate. She refused to let Ripto see the gut wrenching pain that she experienced every single time she saw him with Pitch. When she hatched a nest with her new mate, Locus, she didn't even care that Aries sold them immediately for exalt fodder, claiming they were too ugly to remain in the clan or sell for anything else. She was emotionally detached from this life she was trying to piece together. She was, for lack of a better word, numb. When she found out that Ripto and Pitch were expecting their first clutch, it was too much for Schatten. Without a word to anyone, even the son she loved with all her heart, she left. She wasn't strong enough keep up the charade that everything was okay. She left the Glass Shatter and never looked back. A Bitter Son Nerve had shared a strong bond with his mother who had protected him so diligently from birth. Though Aries was the one who forced the separation of his parents, he blamed his father for his mother leaving. He hated his father and his new mate with a growing passion. The day his mother left he vowed that he would never let the couple experience the joy that they had stolen from his mother. He would kill off any offspring that the couple produced. Ripto and Pitch would be forced from here on out to protect their young by hiding their nests from Nerve. They could only hide them while they were still small, so if a hatchling grew without finding a clan of his or her own to join, then they would be sent to Shadowbinder for their own protection. Later, when they moved to the Southern Icefield, their offspring would be sent to the Icewarden instead. It was better to serve a life of exaltation than to have it ended in the jaws of their half brother. The only one that was allowed to live was Grit, born of the first clutch from Ripto and Pitch. From the moment he saw her, Nerve vowed to protect his sister. She suffered from the same skin deformity that Nerve had inherited. As it turns out, it was never Schatten's fault at all. The birth defect came from Ripto. It's a shame that she hadn't stuck around long enough for the clutch to hatch. She might not have had to carry her guilt with her in her new life. |
