Albus, the sort-of-but-not-quite-retired merchant traveller formerly heading a great merchantile empire, has found retirement to involve rather too much sitting still for his liking, so he 'keeps his hand in' by starting- and chairing- the Oakheart Merchants' Guild. This coincidentally entails him becoming the main merchant for import and export of goods with the auction houses and allied clans. He brings in whatever the artisans require, usually at a much lower price because of his contacts, history, and the fact that his name still brings with it some clout from a history of honourable trading.

It doesn't hurt, mind you, that a few rumours are circulating about a number of former brigands, highwayman, and pirates of the high seas, have recently settled in the Oakheart clan, working as his employees on his many 'merchant' ships. Their apparently having mended their ways, he bankrolls all of them, even the infamous 'Grand Larceny', his flagship staffed almost entirely with dubious characters of impeccable but mistrustworthy repute. These often convicted criminal dragon shipmates would consider any double-crossing to be a personal offense- and undercutting prices, breaking deals or failing to provide sufficient renumeration for jobs might all be considered double-crossing. But it would be highly undiplomatic for Albus to mention this to his sellers. In fact, he strenuously denies the allegation, (loudly, meaningfully, and often without there being any rumors to start with), that most of his ships are crewed by mostly-reformed and easily offended felons. He is, at the core, a businessman- not even these years of life amongst the easygoing Oakhearts can quite cure him of that.

Nowadays, he spends his time travelling and keeping his mercantile interests afloat, and his shore leave he spends doting lavish attention on his beloved granddaughter, Gabrielle. She gets a bit overwhelmed at times and irritated at others, particularly because his attention is so flamboyant and against her own simple tastes, but she appreciates the effort nevertheless. He's making up for lost time, after all.

Albus was a noble, but took his responsibility seriously and genuinely cared about the subjects he was given to rule; he was born to King Sparrow and Queen Koori from a mighty lair on the snow squall tundra. He was raised with all the best tutors, learned academia and commerce; how to run a clan successfully as well as how to chart the course of the stars in the skies; his favourite subject, and he spent many sleepless nights staring up at the heavens as they traced circles in the clear cold nights. Albus also learned to fence well enough to defend his family's honour in a duel, which happened often enough in his hotly contested position of next in line to the throne. However, his shining future was not to be; for he was the 1%; an outlier, failing to develop the correct peregrine adult plumage befitting status as one of the elite in their clan, of the subspecies Snowy Owls; instead his wings shone iridescent as fresh-fallen snow, like his honoured father, Sparrow. He was rejected from the ruling class, shunned by his peers and former 'friends', and even his betrothal to his beloved childhood sweetheart Angel was revoked. His mother was incensed that so much had been invested in Albus, all to waste- and also furious that her own favourite had been overlooked and would now have so much to learn in so little time- but Albus' father just embraced him, holding him as the tears rolled down his cheeks in shame, and whispered that it was alright, he was still loved.

Albus gathered his meagre belongings- the dried winter provisions he'd gathered and the rejected dowry he'd worked so hard to earn- not from his parents' coffers, as was the tradition, but from the sweat of his own brow gathering sparkling stones from the darkness of the mines- and set out. Angel was awoken from her fitful slumber by the pattering of soft snowballs on her window; Albus begged her to speak with him, and she gathered herself with as much dignity as she could muster and met him in the woods outside their borders. Once there however, she was taken aback; he clearly meant to leave, and she begged him to stay- he said that if she was not for him, then there was nothing left for him here. She swore then that she would go with him, for she had promised her heart to him on the day they had become betrothed, and no one could take that away from him, peregrine or no peregrine, throne or no throne. Where he went, she promised, she would follow.
He took her hands and kissed them in gratitude, and they eloped together- deciding that they would make their own fortunes and then come back in glory rather than disgrace. They travelled from clan to clan, wintering awhile in the Viridian Labyrinth. Albus' lessons in commerce had been put to good use, and they owned a number of trading ships which went from port to port, trading fine goods between distant shores. One had even sailed back to their home lair, bringing news of the couple's roaring success to their birth clan. Soon messengers returned with reply from their families; Angel and Albus' elopement was formally recognised and they were welcome to return with honour at their earliest convenience, for all were eager to see them again.

In celebration, the newlyweds- though they had lived as a couple all this time- spent their honeymoon in the Viridian Labyrinth, and had a nest while doing so. However, something extraordinary happened- the magic of nature surrounding them had transformed the element of the hatchlings, so that when they broke their shells and blinked at the new world around them, the eyes they opened were emerald green, not the pure ice blue of their parents. The shame was too much for Angel to bear. To have children out of clan was one thing, but her parents- strict Ice purists- would never forgive her 'mistake' of birthing children of Nature. Albus couldn't understand, pleaded with her not to go- but she vanished that very night- he chased after her, but became lost in the storm that her magic summoned up to stop him following her- he turned back, knowing her heart was made up, but that made it no easier for him to piece back together his which was frozen in shards of ice. She returned to home in the Southern Icefield, but rather than face the sheer disgrace and disappointment of her family, she went to the Icewarden's deepest lair, and begged to pledge her life to him so that she might redeem some fraction of her family's honour.

______ Albus would not ever contact his original family again, for he blamed his home clan for his life mate's sacrifice, and considered their puritanical rejection of his perfect children, a personal betrayal. However, Albus himself found he could barely stand to see his beloved hatchlings, for it broke his heart all over again every time he saw her in their faces. He loved them more than life itself, but he could not bear the pain, so he had them rehomed with different loving families in the Oakheart Clan, who brought them up as their own. Albus worked harder than ever to provide for them all, and he dedicated his trading empire to raise funds for orphaned hatchlings, the lonely and the lost- but still, the wound in his heart would not close.
One fateful day, unseasonal snow struck the borders of the Oakheart clan's forest home; he watched the youngsters dance and play as the sky fell in frozen stars, and found himself smiling in memory of a couple of youngsters, one imperial and one tundra, laughing and catching snowflakes on their tongues, making snow angels together- In the distant mist and swirling unseasonal snowdrifts, his eyes played tricks on him- he fancied he could see her, his Angel, glowing white as fresh-fallen snow in bright spring sunlight as she burst through the clouds to alight before him- but this time her eyes were softer, the pale green of wind, not the unforgiving coldness of ice, and her form was lighter, but the grace with which she moved was just the same. He felt the block of ice which had grown around his heart begin to melt in the warmth of that gaze, and a second smile not seen on his face for many moons began to blossom across his face; for his heart, in a different form, had finally returned to him. Celandine herself might take some time coming to terms with the fact, but he dedicated the rest of his life to showing her what she meant to him. Her, and the rest of the family the gods had seen fit to let him have back into his life.

______ Albus is immensely proud of his three children, and his granddaughter. He has recently written letters to them, telling him of their birth, and how much he loves them all. Firstly, his youngest granddaughter, Gabrielle, he heard of via a Pearlcatcher named Snowdown, who met him while staying in MomentsofClarity's lair. It was she who inspired writing all this down, and it was through her that he was finally reunited with the rest of his beloved children. His future now, looks bright.
