MATE

Sometimes, she still hears his voice. Feels the depth of it, rumbling through her as if it's swimming under her irritated skin. Itchy. So, so itchy.

Valdis is still unable to comprehend how she became the Charge of a Guardian who would willingly create monstrosities of their own children.

And then, she remembers the leader of her birth clan. Remembers her siblings' frantic wails as they thrashed in the Wyrmwound where they, and she, had been tossed in some tragic and mislead ritual to weed out the weakest. To her displeasure, she had been the strongest.

At the cost of their lives, no less.

The Wyrmwound left her with an eternal grin and itchy, itchy, itchy skin that cracks and bleeds at the slightest provocation. The journey to the Labyrinth was one of necessity, lest she be inducted into the nightmare that was her 'family.' A place where she wouldn't see their claws reaching for her--that was what she wanted. And the lair that she came upon, and the mist the cooled and hydrated her skin, seemed to do the trick quite well. She was sure that she would be unable to stay...but the air was nice, and she found herself skulking about a massive stretch of ruins that lingered near the border of the territory.

She was found by Lockwood, as were many in the clan, a small wounded creature barely big enough to defend herself. She was one who needed their protection most of all--and it was granted without second thought. And so, she made a home for herself with this surprisingly welcoming druid and his kin. Everything went well, for some time. She gained a mate named Vitalik--a strange Imperial, even stranger than Lothair. But she loved him, truly, despite it.

And then, one day, he was gone. Vasilios arrived, covered in his blood--it was in those moments that her world had come crashing down around her. He said it was due to prophecy, that had had to destroy him, due to something known as the Emperor Curse Mark--a mark that deemed Vitalik was destined to be resurrected as one of the massive beasts. Valdis had seen every inch of him, and knew no such thing existed. But Vasilios insisted. And, numbly, she gone along with it. Lockwood, though hesitant, accepted him into the clan--but insisted, secretly, that he be watched. Closely.

No one truly knew what horrible things Vasilios had planned until it was nearly too late.

Valdis, upon having met Aushedar, became pregnant with his children--three eggs, three young lives that could very well become horrible amalgamations at Vasilios' command. He would never let them live, so long as they resided here. Not even she could protect them--and so, she sent them away. One daughter, to her beloved sister. The other, to a sister clan--and her single son to another. They would be safe, there. Loved.

When the day arrived, Vasilios tried, in vain, to stop them all. He paid for his atrocities with his life, and his grave now resides somewhere near Valdis' beloved ruins, surrounded by protective charms. But they're still not enough, she often thinks to herself. His voice...it still cries in the dark of night. 'Betrayer...betrayer...'

She fits her title well, she then thinks. And, that she is proud of such a thing...and always will be. And then, she lifts her head and sings to quiet him. Dark, and haunting, in a language that no one really seems to understand. Only one would understand it, but she sent her away. To save her...always, always, to save her.

For now, she lives to protect her beloved adopted children. The strong and misguided Erebos, and the unsure yet incredibly wise Deyanira. Her cursed children, she muses. How incredibly fitting...
