Blacksmith
“Let the hammer fall, and forge our future anew.”
Just from looking at her, it’s easy to tell that Theodora is a blacksmith and a shopkeeper. She can usually be found at her forge— working day and night to create weapons and armor for her clan. She always has the tools of her trade sitting around; a worn stone hammer, pliers and clamps of all sorts. She keeps many different things at her workbench.
Even the state of her hands and claws tells something about her profession. The undersides of her fingers and palms are rough and calloused from years of hard, manual work. Her claws are trimmed short— clearly not used for any sort of defense or attack. She’s no warrior, although she might make tools for warriors to wield. Theodora has spent many years practicing her trade. As such, she’s become rather well-known among more serious warriors. They come from all across Sornieth to seek her and buy her weapons and armor. Although she usually just works for the members of her clan, she’ll sell to anyone for the right price.
Theodora has a peculiar relationship with the Spiral, Zephryn. He serves as her assistant and apprentice. She’s currently teaching him the basics of blacksmithing, although it will be many years before he actually learns how to make a blade or breastplate on his own. In the meantime, he serves another very important function. Not many people know it, but Theodora is completely mute.
The Imperial had an illness as a hatchling that completely rendered her vocal cords useless. She can understand speech just fine, and has no trouble writing, but prefers to have Zephryn act as an interpreter for her when she’s working. He deals with the customers— asking them questions and giving them any information or advice they might need while Theodora slips him little written notes under the counter. She has Zephryn sworn to keep her secret. She hates to show weakness, and worries that she would lose business if anyone found out. Of course, some people in the clan have figured it out, but they’ve been too polite to say anything about it.
