BeautifulNight
Soul Mate to Blueeyes

The Starwood Strand is beautiful at night, but it is also dangerous. Many hatchlings never see the day beyond the borders of the spindly forest, so entranced by the pulsing lights and faint glows are they. It is not unusual to discover dragons wandering aimlessly among the trees, babbling under their breath to no one in particular. BeautifulNight, named for the Strand’s evening glory, is eternally grateful that she is not one of these dragons.

The mystical forest never claimed her mind, and instead, she quickly claimed it for her own. Even as a hatchling, she would scrape the bark from the trees, peeling it off in great slivers and dragging it back to her nest to chew and stamp into a pulp. At first, her parents found the behavior peculiar and monitored her closely for any signs of illness, especially the fading of plumage that accompanies any ill Coatl.

However, she behaved in an entirely normal fashion beyond her compulsive bark gathering, and eventually the matter was dropped. Someone, though, had to encourage it, and jealous of the dragons migrating away from the Strand, BeautifulNight decided it was time for her to go, too. With the politest of words and most heartfelt of goodbyes, she gathered up her bark collection and bid her family farewell. It was not in her nature to wish strife or struggle on anyone, and the heartbroken hums of her mother almost called her back.

However, there was an independent spirit coming to life in the Coatl, and she held fast to her choice to depart. Unfortunately, she did not consider where to go. For a couple days, she wandered the Strand by herself, sheltering in the groves she recognized as safe (rather than being populated by the mad wanderers). Soon, though, the Focal Point called her name, visible between the interlaced branches overhead, and she set off along the spiraling upward path.

The way was a quiet one, but when she reached the first place where the slope even out, she was assaulted by a myriad of movement and light. She had reached the most densely populated portion of the point, and distinguishing one clan from another in the flurry of activity was impossible. There seemed to be market stalls open at all times, even in the dead of night, and where a clan sat one day, a new one would take its place the next. This she hoped was just a result of migratory clans, but after seeing a colony of Fae vanish straight into the shimmering pink crystals, she began to suspect it was the peculiar magic permeating the region, causing disruptions in space.

She hoped to herself that it wasn’t disturbing time, too, and feared that one day she would leave the Focal Point only to discover she had been there hundreds of years during what felt like a few days, and that all of her loved ones in the Strand would be gone. Terrified by the thought, she pressed onward, climbing the spiral path further until she reached another flat expanse, this one less rambunctious than the last. It was here that she found her new home. Bone weary and dragging her sling filled with Strand bark behind her, she gratefully accepted an offer of food and shelter from one of the first clan representatives she met.

To her surprise, the clan felt much like home, which seemed to be a result of its own recent departure from the Strand. The dragons were not familiar to her, but they all had the relaxed yet careful air of those who have lived among the treacherous wood’s magic and survived. Soon enough, she laid her traveling gear to rest and declared the clan her new home. Of course, she needed to pull her own weight, feeling enormously guilty about accepting the offer to stay without bringing some kind of good or service to the table.

However, unbeknownst to her at first, she had brought something of value. Her bark from the Starwood Strand, magically imbued as it was, proved to be excellent material for charmed paper. Nowadays, if a dragon requires a book of spells, they come to BeautifulNight first for her high-quality paper, which she has finally learned to fashion beyond the pulpy mess she made as a hatchling. Given the nature of most Arcane Flight dragons, business is booming. Conscientious as she is, though, BeautifulNight is sure to make time for her friends in the clan. NaughtyNutella, the rune scribe, often visits her on personal calls, just to talk about his newest rune breakthroughs (and sometimes to beg for just a little discount on her special paper).

However, most of her social time is taken up visiting the clan’s magic mirror maker, Blueeyes. She stops by his workshop almost daily to admire his new products, and it does not escape her, the way he hums and purrs more often when she is in his presence. She wishes she could do the same to let him know that she shares his fond feelings, but she is discovering admitting to being in love is quite hard, possibly harder than leaving home was. For now, she spends as much time with Blueeyes as possible, hoping he’ll make the first move.
