Butterface is really quite the disaster, but he's also an extremely lucky disaster. He somehow managed to get on the colony roster and left Tixoi before it was destroyed. He was on the ship that didn't crash on Sornieth. He survived a vicious game referred to as the "Hunger Games" that only Strantlummus actually believes exist (which is not much of a boost to his credibility, given how Strant is, well, Strant).
He also managed to land in the "relationship" he has with Cass, in which he isn't expected to hold a real romantic interest in her, but can help the colony.
