DarkSky didn't have the best childhood. Her father was there, but he didn't involve himself with his hatchlings. As for her mother, Fading only put effort into her brother, RunningFear, as he was chosen to be the heir of their clan, HollowClan. Fading wanted to ensure RunningFear was given additional training in order to be fully prepared for the role of leader. Unfortunately, this left DarkSky without much attention. Being the only survivor of her clutch, she lacked playmates. While she had two surviving older brothers in addition to RunningFear, they weren't much help. BerryPowder had left the clan before she was even born, and ShadowFade was already an adult. Though friendly, most nights RunningFear was too exhausted from his training to talk to her. DarkSky was, for the most part, left alone. She became desperate to prove herself to her mother. She practised day and night and grew up to be as good of a fighter as her brother. Fading noticed this, but didn’t ever give it any recognition. Fading knew DarkSky would become the heir if something happened to RunningFear and that's all there was to it. DarkSky already knew everything, further training would be of no use, and what's the point of a couple of proud words?

To DarkSky the only way to ever be acknowledged by her mother was to become heir. But as long as RunningFear was alive that wasn’t happening. She disliked her brother because of this, but she hid it well. In fact, RunningFear would have said he and his sister got on well! DarkSky had to hide her dislike. For wouldn't have wanted to be suspicious if an "accident" were to occur.

One day the Shade spoke to DarkSky. She wasn't afraid and answered back. After that, the hate disappeared. It didn't matter anymore, the Shade was what would make her a leader, not hate. The Shade trained DarkSky to become even more skilled than before. She knew she would be a good leader.

When Fading died, DarkSky's dream of leading didn't. Turns out her ambition wasn't just there because of her mother.

It was only long after DarkSky's encounters that ShadowFade too discovered the Shade. But unlike DarkSky, who the Shade genuinely seemed to favour, ShadowFade was just a tool to get a clan underneath the Shade's control. He was never told more than he needed to know, never warned of the future. He wasn't even aware that DarkSky too had spoken to the Shade. DarkSky herself knew exactly what was coming. Yet she didn't speak out. She didn't warn anyone of the dangers to come, not of the battle, not of the sickness, not of anything. She was too power-hungry to risk it.

After the death of their mother, RunningFear took over as leader. While much remained the same, RunningFear took a rather different approach to their deity, the Plaguebringer, than Fading had. Whereas Fading had had a somewhat nonchalant view on worship, RunningFear saw it as of the utmost importance. Daily and weekly the Plaguebringer had to be worshipped and gifts be sacrificed. While many dragons did approve of his stance, a deity is to be respected after all, an equal amount tired of his overzealous worshipping and even more so the toll it took on their wealth. Resentment slowly built within the clan.

This did not go unnoticed by RunningFear's ambitious siblings. They sought to take advantage of the situation. RunningFear, trustful and having genuine warmth for his siblings, was blissfully unaware of any danger they might pose to him. He was aware of some dragons' opposition to him of course, he wasn't dumb, but he knew none of them could successfully challenge him. Even if half the clan disliked his worship, they would still never accept someone not chosen by Fading as heir, so high was the respect she had earned over her lifetime. The only ones who might successfully overthrow him were his siblings, and they of course would never do such a thing!

ShadowFade, corrupted by the Shade, spread his poisonous views until he had enough support within the clan to successfully challenge RunningFear to a duel, using their differing religious views as the backdrop. A duel's rules are set by the participants. And although RunningFear tried to moderate the violence, he quickly noticed he was fighting for his life. ShadowFade aimed to kill, no blow was softened by brotherly affection, no hit lightened by guilt. It was a bloody battle. Still, in the end it was RunningFear who won. All that training Fading had given her chosen heir paid off. Yet, unlike ShadowFade, RunningFear could not bring himself to kill his brother, and instead banished ShadowFade from the clan forever.

Where was DarkSky during all this? Waiting, watching from the sidelines. She had patience, plenty of it in fact. She figured she had a better chance of taking over after the mayhem caused by her brother. She knew she would eventually be successful, after all, she was the one with the Shade's instructions.

The Shade told DarkSky to leave with ShadowFade if he lost the battle and she obeyed. Staying would mean facing the coming plague that the Shade had prophesied long ago.

She and ShadowFade settled in a place far from HollowClan. They began to build a new clan together, but so far from their homeland, they only met a very different sort of dragon. Old and new traditions mixed, creating FadeClan's very own culture. Gone were the naming traditions of old and the honoured bloodlines, now what mattered was family, and that didn't mean the blood family.

While they were busy building a new life, the Shade was silent for some time. But when it spoke, DarkSky listened. The prophesied plague had done its job. HollowClan was no more. It was time to move back to Lifesap Forest.

The forest was an oddity amongst the harsh and dry plains of the abiding boneyard. Its ecosystem was rich enough to support a pack of mirrors year round. No more moving between territories. FadeClan rejoiced. The two siblings finally took control of the territory they had so long desired. What was left of HollowClan gladly joined their new Clan. RunningFear had been one of the first to perish from the disease.

Being the second most influential dragon in the clan wasn’t enough for DarkSky. She tolerated ShadowFade so long as he was doing the risky work of starting a clan. In early days insurrections are common. Now that the clan was settled and strong, she would rule. DarkSky murdered ShadowFade. She pretended it had been a serthis BeastClan and what reason would someone have to question her? She was well-liked.

DarkSky had shown her true colours. She wasn't just a poor abused hatchling. The darkness came from herself.

But perhaps she couldn’t keep her conscience from bothering her. Maybe later she regretted all the lies and deceit. For when BerryPoison showed up in his altered state she showed pity and made sure he had a place in the clan.
