Nixie | Beloved | Brewer    ╭━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╮ "What is sight compared to the rest of the world?" - NIX - ╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯ Born blind, Nix lives a life full of secrecy. Her father, Oberon, took up with a dragoness after he left his first mate, Nym. Nix was born from this partnership, and as a result, she grew up held at an arm’s length. Her father was ashamed to have begotten her, and her mother died before Nix could form even the vaguest memory of her. Nix would have been left to raise herself. Her blindness complicated things further as she was even less capable of taking care of herself than the average hatchling. Truly, she was saved by the intervention of Nym, who could never leave a child to suffer, even if it the child of an unfaithful lover. Nym ensured that Nix and her siblings had a place in the nursery and provided them with food, clothing, and all manner of things that hatchlings needed. Nix's blindness puzzled her would-be mother however, and Nym was never quite sure how to teach her daughter to navigate the world. Help often comes from unexpected places, however, and for Nix, it came in the form of her older half-brother. Jensen, having been abandoned by his own parents once, recognized that Nix needed someone to guide her, and he gladly took on the role. Nix’s earliest memory of her brother is an instance in which she used his formidably large body as an obstacle course, slowly guiding herself over the unfamiliar terrain until she triumphantly stood upon his head. Seeing her determination, Jensen took on the responsibility of teaching her all that he could about the world. He would read her a description of a particular thing while he allowed her to hold the thing itself in her hands. In this way, Nix came to know her world through feeling and texture and smell. The round smooth stones underfoot that meant she was near the river, the acrid stench of Celpira's cauldron, and the tickling sensation of cottonwood seeds near the edge of their territory. As she grew older, Nix developed, as many do, the desire to be useful and to carry out a role for the clan. She decided, perhaps arbitrarily, on the role of an apothecary. While Jensen was hesitant that she could fulfill a role where one wrong ingredient could mean death, he agreed whole-heartedly to help her try. He taught her the best plants for healing and let her identify them by texture and the smell rather than name. When it seemed she had grown proficient at this, she appealed to Nym to find her a position with Nimbus, the resident medic. Nym could never say no to such a noble aspiration, however unlikely it may seem, and she convinced Nimbus to take on an apprentice for a little while. It quickly became apparent that Nix would never become a bonesetter, her blindness not so much stopping her as her proneness to fainting. Predictably, Nix hates flying, she feels unstable and the fear of crashing or losing control induces panic attacks in her. She keeps her feet firmly planted on the ground and only the direst of emergencies or the greatest trust in her companion will convince her to brave the unknown void that is the sky. She spends her days in her den mixing poultices and potions for healing although the occasional dragon can convince her to contrive less practical mixtures: giggling draught, shrinking solution, and silencing brew, to name a few. She relies primarily on her younger sister Elyon for ingredients, although this may be just an excuse to keep an eye on her. Nix senses a depth to her sister's pain that even Elyon has difficulty putting into words, and Nix dislikes letting her stray too far from her reach. Nix’s mate, although unknown to most, is Chaos. Though he was kept as a prisoner for a long time after an assassination attempt, Chaos has been tentatively allowed on probation. He is charged to Nix’s care and spends time helping her with some of the more unpleasant jobs, cleaning up after sick dragons, stirring the hot cauldron of brews, bottling and labeling various concoctions, as Nix can’t read or write for obvious reasons. Chaos also took up the job of a bonesetter, at which he excels and none of his patients find room to complain about his methods. This arrangement doesn’t bother either of them, but they must do all they can to prevent the discovery of one of their darkest secrets. During the time when Chaos was still imprisoned, Nix fell in love with him and they had one child. Because the act would have marked Nix as a traitor to the clan, Chaos persuaded her to let him free for one night so he could take their son away to the borders and set him free, that he might lead a life free of his parents and they free of their mistake. Heartbroken, she agreed, and Thanatos, her only son, was taken away. She is cruelly aware of the fact that she will never see him again, but she hopes still that he might someday return. Of course if he does, his parents may not live to see the dawn. Nonetheless, Nix loves Chaos with all her heart and she him, and from each other, they keep no secrets. |
