Biography

Erebis | Monster | Healer ╭━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╮ "A soldier without his honor is no better than a murderer." - CHAOS - ╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯ Chaos is defined as a lack of order. For this guardian, it represents the absence of everything that defined his life. Born in a Plague clan under the name Erebis, he was once a great knight. The clan modeled their government after a story found in the archives, it told of a king and his many knights that preserved peace in his kingdom. The dragons of his former clan, their names changed or forgotten, maintained that the King should be in full command of forty knights, all of whom were trained from childhood to obey orders to a fault and above all, never to desert their cause. Erebis was the Knight of Four, only superseded by the King’s own sons. However, as his knights reached young adulthood, the King determined that they should go to war against a neighboring clan. Their mission was simple: capture the queen, subdue her subjects, expand the kingdom. The knights had trained for years for their first battle, and they operated under the youthful foolishness that they were immortal; the death of twenty-five of their number proved them tragically wrong. Eventually their King was taken captive and fifteen juvenile warriors were left with no choice but to surrender. But the warring clans were from Plague, and the Queen had plotted a sadistic end for their King. She infected him with one of Plaguebringer’s cruelest diseases: one that turned the body’s immune system against itself. The knights watched in horror as their King was brought to his knees, convulsing and roaring in terror. His final order, given as his breathing became ragged and he choked on his own blood: “Run.” Some were already contracting the disease, others stood in mute horror, but the command was issued and so they had no choice but to obey the singular command they had each sworn never to accept: to desert their King. Those who still had the strength ran and several fell on the way. In the end, three made it out. The Knights of Seven, Four, and Thirty. They stayed together for some time, commiserating their shared guilt and grieving the loss of their brothers in arms. Eventually, the other two committed themselves to the ranks of Plaguebringer, unable to live with the guilt of their actions. Only Erebis remained. He never spoke of the horrors of that night and saw himself forever more as a traitor and a coward. Instead, he took his sword and became a mercenary, fighting for profit and occasionally, for sport. He was repulsed by who he had become and abandoned the name of Erebis in favor of Chaos. His charge, his king, was gone, and there was no redemption for cowards. He wandered, leaving a few ex-lovers and a string of fatherless children. He was eventually approached by a renegade clan with a proposition for a job. Not a battle, but an assassination. Chaos had never attempted one before, it was always considered beneath his dignity, however a sudden bout of self-hatred persuaded him to take the job. Chaos was given the order to assassinate a ridgeback, Jabberwock. Apparently, neighboring clans were uneasy with the dragon who they believed to be Fethryn’s lap dog and wished him gone. Had it not been for the intervention of his conscience, Chaos may have succeeded. He never intended a fair fight, but Jabberwock was far more skilled that he had anticipated. In a brief flash of honor, Chaos stayed a fatal blow, and the Ridgeback outmatched him, though not without great injury. Within the hour, the guardian was clapped in irons and imprisoned. For a long time, Chaos was not ready to confess his crimes because he was not ready to be forgiven, but it was Nix who taught him that everyone deserves forgiveness and a second chance at redemption. He slowly began to trust her, and later on, he fell in love with her. The two had one son, who they had to send into hiding due to Chaos’s imprisonment. If Thanatos was ever discovered to be their son, Nix would be marked a traitor, and Chaos would not live to see the next morning in the clan. Although many have not forgotten Chaos’s attack on their sentry, some of the more open minded dragons, such as Elert, Precision, Barty, Nimbus, and surprisingly, Fethryn and Basker, have allowed him freedom within the clan, but only so long as he keeps on his best behavior. Jabberwock, insisting that Chaos must be either very brave or very foolish to attack him, has a grudging respect for the dark guardian, but not enough to allow him to wander as he will just yet. Presently, Chaos spends most of his time with Nix in her apothecary shop, doing all the undesirable tasks, stirring the cauldron of foul-smelling brews, labeling vials, taking inventory and the like. The apothecary shop would soon become a refuge for the minorly injured. While Nix is plagued by a weak stomach and an intolerance for blood, Chaos has no such inhibitions. He has seen far more carnage on the battlefield, and he is happy to set bones and stitch up gashes. Perhaps in his heart of hearts, he hopes to atone for some of his sins through the labor. His patients leave with nothing to complain of in his treatments, but not all are so willing to submit to his hands. He dutifully pretends not to notice their hesitation, after all, what has he done to earn their trust? Nix is perhaps the best reason Chaos has to continue. With her by his side, he strives for redemption, and the two have accepted each other as life mates. Although the arrangement is still kept secret from most, they are not ashamed. Chaos loves Nix with more heart than he ever knew he possessed, and he is ever the more afraid of losing her. |
